As much as I've enjoyed a lot of the new books we've gotten in this new era, I really do miss the litverse. It was this whole universe unto itself, and following its stories was something I looked forward to every year. We also got a lot more books with a lot more frequency.

True, and to say so is to say the quiet part out loud that the writing in Discovery served those characters better than SNW has.

I appreciate how Discovery and SNW recontextualize the TOS era, retconning the idea that women couldn't command starships. Women not only commanded starships during the era, one of them had the distinction of being one of Starfleet's most decorated Captains. As it should be.

This scene illustrates so well why S5 is a great final season. The way it reflects on the series past through the lens of its characters growth, how far they've come from where they began, both within and without, both with each other and within their own agency is pitch perfect.

Without doubt or reservation she is the gold standard. Her work is so rich and textured on so many levels.

She's a beauty. Worthy of the name Enterprise.

DS9, which is my favorite Trek show alongside Discovery, has been pretty well regarded in recent years. Voyager and Janeway on the other hand stay getting dragged through the mud so the Voyager respect I think was especially needed and appreciated.

Truly. Voyager always felt like the red headed step child of classic Trek which was totally unjustified to me, and the vitriol with which Janeway has been treated always infuriated me, so I'm so glad new Trek has given Voyager and Janeway their proper respect in the lore.

One of the things I appreciate about this era of Trek is the respect they've put on Voyager's name. From acknowledging Janeway as one of the most decorated officers in Starfleet history, to preserving Voyager's legacy 800 years into the future, the writers have demonstrated such respect for Voyager.

One of my friends is watching DS9 for the first time. Her jaw was on the floor.

Same here. I'm hoping they pop up in Starfleet Academy.

I was blown away. They had me at hello.

There are so many awesome episodes so it's hard to pick one, but I'd have to go with Unification 3.

It was eight years ago today when this incredible show came to our screens and ushered in a new era of Star Trek. From the Vulcan Hello to Life Itself the series told some amazing stories and pushed the franchise forward in real measurable ways. My love forever, Discovery.

I always thought of this as the moment DS9 changed. The destruction of the Odyssey and the full reveal of the Dominion in this and later episodes changed DS9 forever in all the good ways. DS9 took a bold swing, and it worked beautifully.

It's not everyday that Star Trek explores a new era. Most Trek takes place in the 24th century. So for Discovery to take us all the way to the 32nd century, was such a bold swing. Discovery's commitment to exploring new facets for the franchise is a credit to its legacy.

Definitely. I want the franchise to keep being bold. Starfleet Academy seems to be going in that direction. We've never had an Academy show before.

In Discovery we actually explored an extragalactic star system and encountered a species unlike any we've seen before. This widening of the franchise's scope is one of the many things Discovery did to push the franchise forward. I love this kind of exploration.

I hope they start having discussions in the show about her getting her own command.

Couldn't have put it better myself.

Sadly this season has been very underwhelming. So much of it is lacking depth or consistency. We aren't digging into the characters, many characters that should be front and center are getting sidelined (Una) and the stories told just feel so hollow. It's overall really falling flat unfortunately.
