It's a sad fact of being from my generation that we will probably never again experience anything akin to the satisfaction of seeing the Jiffy-Pop poof up.

Cover of a book on the history of the potato.
I'm a big fan of ultra-specific histories. Any recommendations for favorite books on specific objects, clothing items, colors, words, concepts? (Also interested in very niche groups of people or moments in history.)

Two cats sleeping side by side near a windowsill.
Why does the word "catnap" refer to a very short sleep? Every cat I've ever known could sleep for about 47 hours in a single day.

Text box reading: Comedy is a very powerful component of life. It has the most to say about the human condition because if you laugh you can get by. You can struggle when things are bad if you have a sense of humor. Laughter is a protest scream against death, against the long goodbye. Itโs a defense against unhappiness and depression. --Mel Brooks in his autobiography ALL ABOUT ME!
Just finished reading this bio and amidst all the great anecdotes and jokes, his humanity and joy for life shine through. It's so refreshing to spend time with someone not filled with hate.

Vintage magazine promo for Universal with images of Sherlock Holmes, The Mummy, Aquanetta, and others, and a headline that reads "The Creepies Are Coming."
This 1944 SCREENLAND layout for Universal packs an awful lot of synonyms for horror films into its small amount of text. Can't decide which I like most: "the creepies," "chiller-dillers," or "spine-icers."

Cover of Rue Morgue magazine #226, with cover art depicting Lon Chaney as the vampire in London After Midnight. Main cover text reads: "THE LOST HORROR FILMS OF LON CHANEY/LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT/A BLIND BARGAIN/WHILE PARIS SLEEPS."

Sneak peak of the Sept/Oct issue of RUE MORGUE, featuring my cover story on the legacy of LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT. How did the film attain poster-child status, and does it deserve it? Along the way, some of Chaney's other lost films get their due.

Whenever a dog in a movie goes crazy over a fancy female dog walking by, it's always a collie or a poodle, so I'm like great, film's impossible beauty standards even extend to the dog world.

On Patreon, I'm covering gorilla movie history film by film, from 1897 up. THE ESCAPE OF THE APE (1908) has left few traces, but I unearthed a tidbit that makes this film a first of its kindโand an important milestone in ape cinema.

It's profoundly saddening to read that AP will no longer be assigning or running book reviews because readers don't engage with them enough and they take too much effort to plan and assign. People complain about critics as gatekeepers; wait until all that's left is marketing.

Something I noticed after watching Nosferatu (1922) for the 900th time: Since there are no servants, the vampire must have prepared the food himself. I am really loving that Count Orlok baked Hutter a Bundt cake.
