Speaking from my life, my experiences with burnout have been from not accepting this, and abusing my sleep, health, and relationships in pursuit of Doing All Of The Things.

7 / Accept that you don't have unlimited time. Telling ourselves that if we just “work harder” and “pushed ourselves” that we’d be able to do everything is often a false narrative. It makes us feel bad for not achieving everything that we want to have done, and it can wreak havoc on our health.

This is especially important for these types of things when you decide to give them your attention, because it will be easier to let yourself be interrupted by something more urgent.

Setting a time and place to do these things, so that they are not a low-constant buzz in the background of your brain, can help free up mental bandwidth to focus more on your regular day-to-day or whatever it is you want to have done.

6 / Time block high risk experiments. Are there things that keep drawing your curiosity and you tell yourself that you’ll get to it “eventually”? You should allocate specific time to them!

What are your questions? What are your goals? What is the most interesting part of your analyses? These are all questions that seem self evident in our heads while going about our day to day, but they may not be.

They act as snapshots of your project at different stages, helping you track progress, refine ideas, and receive feedback. All the while improving your communication skills and ensure that your research stays aligned with your goals.
