We have some bottled water which will hopefully last. The water company has been terrible in communicating to residents. Thankfully our local MP has been on the case since 6am, and he’s been kicking a** and helping with distributing bottles. The infrastructure here is not remotely resilient enough!

It’s now been 16 hours without water here, and it’s looking like it could be another 12 hours before we have any. About 24,000 people are affected by a fault at a local water storage facility. But the CEO got a 30% pay rise earlier this year, and a bonus of over Β£100,000 too.

I have so many irons in the fire research-wise! I need to finish my studies first and then I can get back on the case. 😊

I saw this one elsewhere and decided it was rather fitting given that I have many #Yorkshire ancestors. πŸ˜‚

There are some good histories of the Crawshay family online, at least for the parts that interest me. I ordered a couple of their wills before the price hike to see if they offer any insight into the rumour shared by a distant cousin. And I’m also revisiting my DNA on this branch!

This must be the first time I’ve seen the name Crawshay mentioned on here. A branch of the family moved to the #ForestOfDean and developed many iron ore and coal mines. Several of my ancestors were employed by them. There’s even a suggestion of an illicit liaison between my family and theirs.

I do keep an eye open for which places you cover for your Research Buddies events, but I’ve realised that Mr H’s ancestors were concentrated in a tiny number of locations. I know you’ve featured two of these already, and they were great fun and really informative. Other FHSs should take note!

Portsea island is basically what we now refer to as Portsmouth. Given its naval history, and with Woolwich having a major naval dockyard and Royal Marines base, might this be a connection?

Setting The Record Straight: Episode 27 - Enparishification
YouTube video by Lifelines Research Setting The Record Straight: Episode 27 - Enparishification

We need to talk about enparishification…

Does your research lack detail? Are you unsure about where your ancestors actually came from? Can you tell the difference between a village and a parish of the same name or do you often conflate the two?

If you answered β€˜yes’ to those questions, watch this…

Regardless of whatever unfounded claims are presented, I’m irritated by the spelling mistakes. Surely, if AI can do anything, can it not even spell words correctly?

If you have Scottish ancestors you might want to look at this.

The #ForestOfDean is a fascinating place to have ancestors from, and I’m proud of my roots there. It’s the reason I recently became a trustee of @gloucestershirefhs.bsky.social.

A wise lesson about understanding #FamilyHistory records and geography. To make matters more complicated I have dozens of ancestors from the #ForestOfDean. Many parts of the Forest were extra-parochial - outside of any parish - until the mid 19th century.

My ancestry has a large Yorkshire branch, but take them back a little and some were from Lancashire. My grandfather would turn in his grave if he knew! πŸ˜‚

I shall have to put β€˜Fen Women’ on my Christmas list. I grew up reading Sybil Marshall’s β€˜Fenland Chronicle’ (I need my own copy of that one too). I may not be Fenland born but it’s where I was raised.

Oh, my! Look what arrived in the post today: not one but TWO parcels of books. One from the @fhsofcheshire.bsky.social book sale (half of Mr H’s ancestors were from Winsford) and the other … well, I can’t wait to dive in!

This must be one of the more unusual planning applications to be considered by a council planning committee: construction of an artificial badger sett. This is so that an established family of badgers can be moved to a more peaceful part of the park.

Yes for me, although I use it primarily for #DNA research. Knowing how your matches match each other is a game changer. I appreciate that the additional cost is an issue, but I suggest you try a one-month sub when you have time to play around. Then decide if it’s worth it longer term. #Genealogy

Indeed. My main problem is living some distance from where my ancestors lived, so getting to the relevant archives is difficult. I’m hoping to visit Kew in January, and I already have a long list.

I’m keeping a close watch on the rollout of the 1910 Valuation Survey. I used the Dorset records to find where my great-grandmother lived in a small village in Dorset - and visited it back in March. When Gloucestershire comes out I’ll be very busy!
