What an affectionate and heartfelt story, Karen. I’m so sorry that you lost your Mum so early, but your writing conveys your love for her. πŸ₯°

While we think of such accidents as tragic in our age, they weren’t unusual historically. I can think of a couple of examples from my own family tree where children died in similarly tragic circumstances.

Absolutely! And the way I research, I add a small number of people then spend a couple of weeks (or longer) adding lots of records. These days I have an Excel template that I work through methodically for a family group. And when the family had 14 children (like the current one) it takes time!

It’s definitely modelled on an Oxbridge college (take your pick) but it only dates back to the mid-19th century from memory.

Happy memories of visiting Hurstpierpoint a few years ago when my son’s school played them at rugby. A sumptuous parents’ tea was laid on after the match - in the quad, in the sunshine. (It was a September fixture, and the weather obliged.)

What a fascinating story, Clare! Lovely that you now have Arthur’s clock; I imagine it must be very special to you.

The more I think about this, the more I realise how big an error it is. How could the Government of the day possibly organise a nationwide survey the same day war was declared? It’s amazing that they could plan it in 4 weeks, but on the same day? It’s nonsense!

A long post from Facebook outlining several generations of a family history which points towards possible royal connections in an unsubstantiated and unsourced manner.

I’ll take my time with this one …

I don’t pay too much attention to #FamilyHistory posts on Facebook. But today I had one asking for information about a name that sounded familiar. Looking at my tree I see that the person in question is a 4x great aunt, and we therefore share 5x GGP. Unsure about the β€˜royal’ connection though!

Goodness! I wasn’t born in 1967 but I still remember the special treat of going to the newsagent (everything shop in our village) and buying a quarter of whichever sweets took my fancy. Lemon sherbets, cola cubes…

I had one for my grandmother yesterday, relating to the 1939 Register. It says the Register was taken on 1 September, the same day that WW2 started. This is wrong; the Register was taken on 29 September. It misses out the ampersand of her address, Fox & Hounds Cottages. The rest is generic / dull.

@digupyourancestors.bsky.social - I recall you posting about Oxford(shire) in the past; this may be of interest.

Purely a guess, but so that any extra identifying marks on their hands are visible? Things such as a badly bent finger, missing the top of a finger, scars or tattoos etc.

Sometimes, #FamilyHistory research can be slow. I’m currently working through the 14 😱 children of Mr H’s 2x great-grandparents.

*Perhaps not as comfortably as the will suggests. The grant shows a gross value for the estate was Β£57 15s, but the net value just Β£1 18s 4d. I suspect her niece and live-in companion may not have received the Β£100 promised.

Another will arrived this morning, for my 2x great-grandmother Susannah Brown (nee Powell). It’s interesting in that there are several specific bequests to children, grandchildren and a niece: a silver watch, a gold brooch, a piano, chiffonier, writing desk … She clearly lived comfortably.

Did this include the bright green woodruff-flavoured syrup used to make the green beer of Berlin?

8x great-grandparents = Cheshire …
… you get the picture.

This feature hasn’t arrived on my account yet. Reading your blog, it seems that the suggestions for further research are good ones, but they simply don’t relate to the records already attached to the particular ancestor. And this strikes me as not very intelligent at all.
