I seem to recall that @historylady2013.bsky.social had a partridge hanging around near her house not so long ago.

Little bells *sewn* onto the skirt, even. Flipping autocorrect! οΏΌ

It was a serious battle, I assure you. It wasn’t right for my figure / looked tarty / didn’t flatter my legs …

The objections were endless … and probably all correct! 🀣

Separately I still have a skirt from university days: just as short, tie-died, with little bells down onto it.

Sorry to read this. It’s been a long time since I was a Mum to a newborn (my son will soon be 18), but there comes a time when the reality kicks in - life gets in the way. Be kind to yourself, and here’s hoping tomorrow is better.

After many arguments with my Mum, I did - briefly - own a white ra-ra skirt. And I made a pair of pedal-pusher trousers in needlework class, despite hating needlework SO much! I did a deal with the teacher that I would sort her budget and she finished my sewing. 🀣

#31DaysOfGraves Day 7: #Angels. I loved this memorial to Bishop Samuel Wilberforce (son of William Wilberforce, the anti-slavery campaigner) in Winchester Cathedral. Having checked the details for today it’s not actually his grave - he’s buried elsewhere. Still, it’s rather magnificent.

I would imagine that the plot had already been purchased, and it was a simple economic decision. My GGM (the second wife) was a formidable business woman, and held many assets in her own name to maintain her financial independence. πŸ˜‰

My Dad was born and bred in Stamford - and he always refers to ginnels, St Mary’s Passage being a prime example.

Here on the Kent/Sussex border it would be a twitten.

For Day 6 of #31DaysOfGraves the theme is #Gender. This post looks at cases where someone is buried with a previous spouse, not their current one. Here is the grave of my great-grandfather, Bill Denniss, who was buried with his first wife. His second wife (my GGM) outlived him by 28 years.

A low boundary around a grave, with two stone ducks sitting on the corners. The inside is filled with slate chippings and some potted cyclamen.

Earlier today I was tidying up the grave of my mother- and father-in-law at Pembury, here in Kent. I took a wander after I'd finished (Ulterior motive, moi? πŸ˜‰) One of these little ducks had fallen over, but I was pleased to be able to put it back in place.

It's rather late in the day, but here's my contribution for #31DaysOfGraves, Day 4. The theme today is #Languages. I saw these two gravestones in what remains of a Jewish cemetery in Große Hamburger Straße in Berlin last year.

#31DaysofGraves Day 3: #Tomb. This is as close as I can get; a grave in the churchyard at Westbury-on-Severn in Gloucestershire which *may* be one of my Bellamy ancestors. If so, probably a 6x or 7x great-grandfather. (I have several generations all called William Bellamy.)

When I first started working with my current employer (some 33 years ago) we had to take turns to boot up our computers with a floppy disk. My younger colleagues are completely stumped when I try to explain …

Passageway? Surely, being Stamford, it’s a ginnel.

In the post I deleted, the sentiment was similar. But the words quoted were a paraphrase of the words written. I’m troubled by the fact I reposted without checking - a lesson learned. πŸ˜”

I have removed my earlier repost of an extract from Anne Frank’s diary. It purported to be a direct quote, but it wasn’t. Here is the original diary entry for the day mentioned, from the copy of her book given to me by my parents for Easter 1982. Accuracy matters.

Using the line β€œweird relative” in the headline was, I suppose, click bait to get you to read the article. But its repeated use really irritated me. I’d much prefer β€œdedicated family historian”. It’s not weird to research your #FamilyHistory; it’s weird not to understand its importance.

I don't know where this revisionism has come from about the suffragettes - people saying "if the suffragettes were around today, they'd be considered terrorists."

The suffragettes were arrested and tortured, sexually assaulted and beaten by the state. They *were* considered terrorists!
