Born in London, William became an architect and designed several buildings in England before coming to the new settlement of Nelson (Whakatลซ) in New Zealand in the 1850s. Nelson today still has many Beatson-designed historical buildings.

At the age of 14, Margaret and her family arrived in Port Nicholson (Wellington), New Zealand. She was carried ashore by a young man who had arrived a few months earlier. Some years later, they were married.
