The Senate continues to debate the budget reconciliation bill that will devastate Nebraska communities by taking away SNAP and Medicaid from tens of thousands - all while funding sweeping deportations of longtime community members.

The Senate has been moving quickly, with policy proposals shifting daily - but their goal remains clear - to take away healthcare, food access, and other basic-needs programs in order to fund tax breaks for billionaires and sweeping deportations of longtime community members.

The Senate just released their budget reconciliation bill text and will start debate soon on the most extensive cuts that Congress has ever considered.

We are grateful to Senator Megan Hunt for introducing and prioritizing this bill, all the senators that voted to see it become law, and for advocates who shared their stories and support. These are children’s benefits - NOT the government’s.

LB275 will provide more transparency, opportunities for engagement, and access to benefits for these youth, allowing them to have more say in what happens to their benefits. It adds almost a million more dollars back into the pockets of foster youth each year to help them prepare for adulthood!

For years, youth in Nebraska’s foster care system who receive social security benefits have had their benefits taken by the state to pay for their foster care - without their consent or opportunity to object.

Just last year, Nebraska took over $4 million in foster youth’s benefits.

Targeting people because of their religion or where they come from – and singling out Muslim and Black-majority countries – is wrong. It goes against our belief that everyone deserves to be treated with respect and dignity.

These heartless and unproductive policies go against what Nebraska stands for. We believe in welcoming people who are fleeing danger and looking for safety – not turning our backs on families in need.

Last night the federal administration announced yet another deeply destructive travel ban and restrictions on 19 countries around the world – including countries where many Nebraskans have family members, such as Afghanistan, Sudan, Somalia, Cuba, and Venezuela.
