The bluebird is a creature of happiness and hope, brought back from the brink of extinction and so we take lessons from the bluebird -- and from our efforts to save it -- on this day. But it's also worth noting that right now THIS bluebird is watching another pair of bluebirds try to lay claim to a nesting box, and the thoughts going through his head are probably "oh fuck you, that's mine," as they keep fighting over that space, like cranky renters. Happy Black History Month! Here is my favorite story about a Black American you may not know about: Robert Smalls. He commandeered a confederate ship and sailed himself, his family, and the other enslaved crew and their families to freedom. THROUGH waters controlled by the Confederacy.
