In Astracordis there are many ways to "do stuff", one of those are non-linear operations, where players have a set of actions that can be performed in any order, and after rolling some dice they can assign them to the actions.

Make a game is a creative/artistic process but have few theoretical knowledge is good as well. I suggest to read "Game Design Workshop", at least the first two parts, it's food for thought
