From laggard to leader ๐Ÿฅณ, the Netherlands hit 25% share of solar PV in electricity generation in 2024. Expecting Spain to overtake next year, as NL is reaching limits of solar absorption on the grid.

Making Europeโ€™s homes โ€˜Hyggeโ€™: Danish lessons on district heating Denmark has steadily advanced district heating over decades. RAP explores the lessons policymakers can learn from the nation's experience.

โ˜€๏ธAs summer rolls along, weโ€™re revisiting some of our 2025 publications. We're covering a few pieces you may have missed, just in time to wrap up your summer reading.

First up: a look at Denmarkโ€™s approach to district heating.

The economic policy mix that worked well for Germany in the bygone era wont work today.

Brad's chart should give a flavour, of the limits of wage restraint. Dereg and squeezing workers ainโ€™t gonna cut it.

So I hope the that there is an intellectual shift in Berlin alongside a policy one.

We need a lot of flex in our system. Industrial heat can make a big contribution through demand-side flex. How?

Policy fixes:
- Rebalance electricity and gas prices

- Modernize electricity prices and grid tariffs for flex.

- Flexible grid connections in exchange for discounts

Electro-thermal energy storage systems convert electricity to high temp. heat and store it in cheap media for later use, mainly in the form of hot water and steam.

Flexibility is the key advantage, filling the storage when prices are low and discharging during peak hours.

Around three-quarters of all industrial emissions in Europe come from process heat, which is almost entirely based on fossil fuels (only 3% electrified).

But a big opportunity, 60% of all processes could be electrified with commercially available technology

Solutions from electric boilers to industrial heat pumps are ready to deploy, especially for low/mid-temp processes. It's time to scale what works.

Demand creation is key, if we drive demand among industry and households to install electrified equipment (heatpumps, e-boilers, EV's, etc.), we support the clean tech sector in Europe. Example: new factory being build in Belgium for industrial heat pumps www.linkedin.com/posts/rossen...

Tax flaw blocks industrial electrification:

Electricity taxed/levied higher than fossil โ†’ distorts costs.

High elec/gas ratio = slower adoption.

Fix:
โœ… Spread levies on ALL energy
โœ… Cut power taxes for heat electrification
โœ… Fund via budgets
