Screen cap of parodic version of William Blake's "The Tyger" that begins:
Tyger! Tyger! Burning bright
(Not sure if I spelled that right)
What immortal hand or eye
Could fashion such a stripy guy?
What the hammer that hath hewn it
Into such a chonky unit?
Did who made the lamb make thee,
Or an external franchisee?

The war on wikipedia by the fascists will only intensify as they seek to entrench their power in every information ecosystem.

I believe we ought to support and protect wikipedia, its community and mission, as one of humanity's greatest libraries of knowledge.

Canada's exploding wealth inequality requires tax changes Our current tax code is not asking the wealthy to reinvest in our economy, and that failure is weakening services and programs working Canadians may use to get ahead.

Clearly true.

You wouldn't know this is clearly true if you followed our legacy media and spokespeople for corporate Canada, claiming massive tax cuts will cure what ails us.

The thing about oilsands companies is that over the past decade they have focused on cutting as many jobs as possible in the name of efficiency while paying as little as possible for the pollution they cause.

I enjoyed "One Battle After Another" but I don't think that when Gil Scott Heron said "the revolution will not be televised" he meant it as a motto for Hollywood's last-ditch action against streaming.

There's plenty of useful things you can do with AI. But AI is (as Princeton's Arvind Narayanan and Sayash Kapoor, authors of AI Snake Oil put it), a normal technology:

https://knightcolumbia.org/content/ai-as-normal-technology

That doesn't mean "nothing to see here, move on." It means that AI isn't the bow-wave of "impending superintelligence." Nor is it going to deliver "humanlike intelligence."

It's a grab-bag of useful (sometimes very useful) tools that can sometimes make workers' lives better, when workers get to decide how and when they're used.

The most important thing about AI isn't its technical capabilities or limitations. The most important thing is the investor story and the ensuing mania that has teed up an economical catastrophe that will harm hundreds of millions or even billions of people. AI isn't going to wake up, become superintelligent and turn you into paperclips – but rich people with AI investor psychosis are almost certainly going to make you much, much poorer.

The conclusion (making it clear this is extreme skepticism about AI economics and hype, not the use case for the *technology* in some circumstances)

There is absolutely no good faith reason to use the term β€œAI” for any technology one is selling.

It serves only for dazzling people into thinking the technology has capabilities that it doesn’t.

If one wants a technology to be trustworthy, just use a transparent, informative term without hype.

Handwritten, "To Ethel, With love from Maud"

Found in a 1904 edition of Fitzgerald's Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam on Hathi Trust. I like to think of Ethel and Maud that year, underneath a bough with a book of verses, a loaf of bread, a jug of wine, and "thou."
