Panel 1: Ryoko stands at the front register of the store where she works, a shelf of cigarettes behind her. She reacts to someone calling her name from out of frame (spoiler alert it's Kairi). Kairi: "Ryoko!" Panel 2: Ryoko and Kairi look at each other. Kairi: "Ryoko, we got trouble! BIG trouble!" Ryoko: "Trouble? What is it?" Panel 3: Ryoko listens to Kairi's bigass word balloon that takes up half the panel. Kairi: "We screwed up and got WAY off schedule, so to save time we have to stat within the same six panels of the last comic!" Ryoko: "...What?" Panel 4: Kairi attempts to assure Ryoko with a big thumbs up. Kairi: "Yeah, so try to match the beats of the last comic and we'll be fine! (Probably!)" Panel 5: Ryoko is at a loss. Ryoko (thinking): "And how exactly am I supposed to do that...?" Panel 6: Ryoko looks around her, assessing the situation. Panel 7: Having taken in her surroundings and noticing nothing unusual, Ryoko begins to speak. What she has not noticed, however, is that between this panel and the last the background has been replaced by a blank sheet of paper. Ryoko: "I don't know, everything seems fine to--" Panel 8: Ryoko jumps back, shocked by the sudden background change. Kairi comes to her side and looks at the background too. Ryoko: "WOAH what the HECK!?" Kairi: "Ah man, guess we ran out of panels with backgrounds."

Abstract Absurdity #7: Big Trouble

This comic was originally scripted when the last comic took a month to be posted, but because of circumstances this one also took a month to be finished. Oh well.

Panel 1: Ryoko is at the front register of the store where she works. Behind her are shelves of cigarettes. She answers a phone call, but is interrupted multiple times before she can finish saying anything. Ryoko: "Hello, this is L-Mart at-" Ryoko: "Huh?" Ryoko: "I don't think that's..." Ryoko: "O-okay, I'll ask..." Panel 2: At the behest of the caller, Ryoko calls to a store manager who was conveniently nearby, doing something that involves a clipboard and looking at a shelf. Ryoko: "Ummm... Becky?" Becky: "What's up?" At the bottom of the panel, there is a caption box stating "Rebecca Krause - Ryoko's boss." She goes by the nickname Becky. Panel 3: Ryoko nervously asks Becky a question, feeling embarrassed to even be asking this. Ryoko: "Do we have 'Prince Albert in a can...?'" Panel 4: Responding to Ryoko's inquiry, Becky has stepped a few feet closer and indicates a shelf immediately to her left. Becky: "Why yes, Ryoko, we do. It's on that shelf with the tobacco products." Ryoko: "Huh? Really!?" Panel 5: Having learned that "Prince Albert in a can" is a real thing they sell at their store, Ryoko enthusiastically relays this info to the caller. Ryoko: "Ah, hello?" Ryoko: "Yes, we do have Prince Albert in a can!" Phone: "Well in that case..." Panel 6: Ryoko listens as the caller finishes their statement. Phone: "...Ya really oughta let him out! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA-" Having delivered their punchline, the caller mockingly laughs at Ryoko and hangs up with a *click*. Ryoko is not amused.

Abstract Absurdity #6: Prince Albert

This comic was inspired by the time I ordered a sandwich over the phone and, while on my way to get it, thought of the old "Prince Albert in a can" joke and recalled seeing an actual can of Prince Albert at an antique mall.

The Font™

Panel 1: A customer approaches Kairi, asking for assistance. They speak using a font that if you read enough webcomics you /will/ start to recognize. Customer: "Excuse me, can you help me find-" Kairi: "Ahh, I see you're using that font." Panel 2: The customer becomes confused. As she talks, Kairi places a bag of chips onto a shelf. It conspicuously stands out from the background like this was a cartoon made before the 2000s but that's hardly relevant. Customer: "...I beg your pardon?" Kairi: "Yup, I'd recognize that "A" anywhere!" Panel 3: Kairi makes her grand declaration. Kairi: "You're totally using THAT font!" Panel 4: Kairi looks smugly satisfied with herself for her powers of observation. Customer: "...What?"

Abstract Absurdity #5: That Font

This comic was inspired by the thoughts that go through my mind every time I read a new webcomic and notice it's using a particular font, which I have forever been cursed to bear the burden of being able to recognize at a glance.

Panel 1: Ryoko looks down at a box of store goods, brushing her hair behind her ear. Ryoko: "Alright, just a few more boxes left." Panel 2: Ryoko hears laughter off-panel and looks towards the source of the sound. Panel 3: Ryoko looks at Tasha and Kairi, who are laughing their assess off reading a comic book. The cover of the book has crude MS Paint drawings of Touhou Project characters. Panel 4: Ryoko speaks to the two goofballs. Ryoko: "Hey, would you guys stop goofing off and help me with this? Get serious already..." Panel 5: Tasha and Kairi respond by acting like they'll be serious but with ridiculous facial expressions. Both: "Ryoko..." Ryoko: "That's the opposite of serious!"

Panel 5: Tasha, Kairi and Ryoko convene. Tasha: "I think I know where to find it, though." Kairi: "Yeah?" Panel 6: Tasha surprises Ryoko by reaching for her ear. Tasha: "Yup!" Ryoko: "Huh?" Kairi is training Ryoko on how to do her job, wrapping up an explanation of the surely complex and intricate methods of working the front register. Kairi: "...And that covers the basics of the cash register." Ryoko: "I see..." A caption box on the bottom of the panel states Kairi's full name and job title: "Kairi Emerson, Peon Second Class, Walson's Convenience Store." How prestigious. Panel 2 The workplace training continues. Kairi: "Got any questions?" Ryoko: "None so far, thank you!" Panel 3 Kairi gives a thumbs up as she assures Ryoko she's about to drop some seriously good advice. Kairi: "Great! Now I'll share with you my best piece of advice." Panel 1 Ryoko, wearing her graduation cap and gown, waits in excitement to receive her college diploma. She thinks about all the effort she's put in to reach this day. Ryoko: "At last, today's the day... The day I graduate college!" A caption at the bottom of the panel states "Ryoko Wakeman" (which is her name) and "English Literature major" (which was the focus of her studies in college). Panel 2 Ryoko stands with her diploma, excitement fills her eyes as she anticipates her surely bright future now that she's received her college degree (lol). Ryoko: "Now that I have my degree... I can't wait to start my career!" Panel 3 We jump ahead to Ryoko's post-college employment. She stands behind a checkout counter (it's pretty accurate to the front register of my old retail job trust me). She wears a convenience store uniform shirt bearing a nametag that says "Ryoko," which is her name. A caption states "Three months later..." emphasizing the frustrating and disheartening amount of time she spent looking for a job before landing in Retail Hell. Panel 4 Ryoko, somewhat lamenting her situation yet also trying to see the bright side of things, thinks to herself: Ryoko: "Well... at least I have a job..." Even here, the punchline is still suffering.

Panel 1 Cirno excitedly holds 2 chocolate bars, one of them has a bite taken out of it. Daiyousei looks on, concerned. Cirno: "Aw yeah! This candy's the best!" Cirno: "I'm gonna eat, like 10 more of these!" Panel 2 Daiyousei voices her concerns about Cirno's intent to wolf down at least 10 more chocolate bars. Daiyousei: "Cirno, if you keep eating candy like that you'll get a stomach ache." Panel 3 Cirno is skeptical. There's no way that she, The Strongest, could be taken down by a simple stomach ache. Cirno: "Big deal! I'm STRONG enough to handle a little--" Panel 4 Cirno suddenly collapses; Daiyousei is shocked. Cirno: "--AGH!!" Daiyousei: "CIRNO!!!" Panel 1 Marisa runs towards Reimu, with troubling news. Marisa: "Reimu, quick! An incident is incidenting!" Reimu [with an exasperated sigh]: "Great, I'll grab my stuff." In the background, Sanae overhears them. Excited at the prospect of a new adventure, she has stars in her eyes, and her own sound effect that says "Sana!" because that's the way Sanae is. Panel 2 Reimu holds her gohei (purification rod) in hand, examining it. Sanae has approached the duo. Marisa: "There is no time! Your gohei is enough." Sanae: "Can I come, too~?" Panel 3 Reimu, equal parts frustrated at having to solve another incident and having to deal with Sanae, turns to face her and kindly declines her request. Reimu [yelling loudly]: NO!!! Marisa and Sanae simply stand there in shock. Panel 4 Reimu begins to leave with Marisa. Reimu: "Come on, Marisa. Let's go." Marisa, in response, mutters "Right..." Sanae begins to cry. To emphasize her immense sadness, Sanae has become a comically pathetic chibi version of herself. She manifests a sad "Sanaaaa..." above her. Despite everything, the punchline is still suffering.
