It was so moving to be in a room (and on Zoom!) with so many passionate advocates. While online meetings are invaluable for breaking down participation barriers, there is something uniquely powerful about being together in person. We hope it won’t be long before we can do it again. #SpeirGorm

Last week DWI with the Disability Participation News Hub organised an event to bring some of these challenges to light. We were joined by a fantastic group of disabled women, non-binary people, and allies to discuss these issues and explore potential solutions.

The reasons behind that are complex and multifaceted - spanning both the costs associated with being a disabled women, barriers to accessing well-paid work, and challenges accessing proper social welfare support.

We don't talk often enough about the fact that disabled people are twice as likely to experience poverty as non-disabled people, and that disabled women are 25% more likely again to experience poverty relative to disabled men.

Amy and Nem are smiling at the camera and are in front of a powerpoint screen that says "Cripping and queering relationships" which is brightly coloured.
A group of four people stand smiling at the camera. Amy is standing on a wheelchair wearing a blue shirt, beside them Nem is wearing purple tights, black shorts, shirt and jacket and has rainbow coloured hear, beside them is Blezzing wearing a floral dress and a mask and on the right hand side of the photo is Ailbhe wearing leather trousers, a black top and a black leather jacket.
@nemkearns.bsky.social and I are down in Cork this weekend at Q-Con with LINQ Ireland (representing @dw-ireland.bsky.social), giving a workshop on Cripping and Queering relationships. It's lovely to be in the same place as so many amazing queer people. Looking forward to tomorrow!

Dublin Maker is a great festival, but what makes it really special is the community that surrounds it. A huge thanks to the rest of the Dublin Maker team and all the Makers for making it such a wonderful experience.
I'm looking forward to what we do next!

The chance to come together with like-minded people to share the joy of making and exploring the world around us is just as compelling to me now as it was back then.
Seven years later, and for the first time having been part of the organising team this year, I'm still fascinated and excited by it.

Five people smile and pose in front of a "Dublin Maker" welcome banner and sponsor signage. They wear event-themed t-shirts and stand near a stone wall and ticket booth.
Two smiling individuals pose inside a red-walled room. One takes a selfie while the other stands near a booth with tablets and cables
A crowd of children and adults gathers outdoors to watch a science experiment. A man in a red shirt and a young girl launch water vertically from a plastic bottle, likely using a chemical reaction. The audience looks excited and engaged, with many children watching closely. The setting is a public space with paved and grassy areas.
A bustling indoor science fair or educational event held in a large public venue. People of all ages explore booths with informational displays, interactive exhibits, and colorful banners.
One week on from Dublin Maker, I’m still recovering, but only because it was such a brilliant, community-filled and conversation-packed two days. I first went to @dublinmaker.bsky.social in 2018 with Jelly Lab and I was instantly hooked.

This is a little late, but I passed my Viva last month, and this week my PhD corrections were accepted - wrapping up 5 amazing years.
I am very grateful for all those who have supported me along the way. A particularly huge thanks to my supervisor Mark Pickering and @niamh-deburca.bsky.social

As part of the Dublin Maker team, I know I'm biased saying this, but going to this as a Maker for the past 6 years has genuinely always been the highlight of my summer!
