Absolutely fascinating talk by Maryam Khaleghipour - including with rich insights into how to study communication in Iran - and her very cool research on the targets of online attacks

The impact of academic research is not always immediate or easy to measure, especially beyond its theoretical contributions, as it can take years to materialize. After 12 years of research & partnerships in the Territory of Good, I received yet another piece of news that filled my heart with joy:

Between Russia and Elon Musk, German Voters Face a ‘Dual Front’ of Disinformation In the first major European vote since President Trump’s re-election, influence campaigns are targeting Germany from two sides.

A German election fought between Kremlin bots, AI, and Musk/ X.

In understanding #disinformation campaigns it is important to not only focus on voting decisions.

It is as much about delegitimizing the election and fueling polarization.

BBC just released damning research on AI assistants' news accuracy.

Results: 51% of AI responses had significant issues. 19% introduced errors when citing BBC. 13% misquoted or made up BBC content entirely. 🤐🤐

We test the role of algorithms in shaping the cost of reaching voters. We find: who sees political ads & at what price depends NOT just on targeting choices.🧵

We also show that poor regions of the country lacked local candidates. Although Brazilian candidates are allowed to campaign across their state of origin, they mostly focused on rich, populous cities, leading to the formation of what we called “regions of representative scarcity”

We show that minority candidates who lacked campaign resources received lower engagement on social media —or in some cases, didn’t campaign on these platforms at all. These findings point to social media reproducing, rather than subverting, existing forms of exclusion in Brazil.

During Bolsonaro’s last months in power, reports emerged of alleged plots for a coup d'etat, including plans to assassinate political rivals.
