Quick facts

Students who choose distance education non- primary enrollment continue to be registered at their local school while earning additional credits from another school authority.

If families choose to enroll their children in a home education program during the teacher strike, they would no longer be registered at their public, separate or francophone school.

If they end the home education program, they are not guaranteed to return to the same school they attended prior to making the change to home education.

School authorities are required to accept returning resident grade 1-12 students and must place them in a school within the school authority.

The government wants to pay you stay home during the strike, then they want you to enroll your kids in private homeschooling programs, so your children don't fall behind. This is taking them out of the public system, as is the goal. Do not enroll your kids in their suggested home education programs.

The specific provision is section 2 of the Calling Forth Act of 1792:

The very first statute authorizing domestic use of the military during domestic emergencies, enacted in 1792 by a Congress full of the same folks who wrote and ratified the Constitution, expressly provided for judicial review in certain circumstances *before* the President could even send troops.

World Teachers' Day

Image: Red headed teacher in yellow shirt holding the hand of a small girl

On October 5, 1966, the Special Intergovernmental Conference on the Status of Teachers in Paris, France, was closed and the Recommendation Concerning the Status of Teachers was signed by representatives of UNESCO and the International Labour Organization. Twenty-seven years later, UNESCO elected to commemorate the importance of the recommendation by designating October 5 as World Teachersโ€™ Day, a day devoted to appreciating teachers the world over.

Since its inception in 1994, World Teachersโ€™ Day has grown into a celebration of and for more than 32 million teachers in over 170 countries around the world. Through activities ranging from students writing letters to their favourite teachers to national holidays in some countries, the world community has been showing its appreciation for the vital contributions that teachers make to society.

โ€œThey dragged little Greta [Thunberg] by her hair before our eyes, beat her, and forced her to kiss the Israeli flag. They did everything imaginable to her, as a warning to others,โ€ the Turkish activist Ersinร‡elik, a participant in the Sumud flotilla, told Anadolu news agency.

Lorenzo Dโ€™Agostino, a journalist and another flotilla participant, said after returning to Istanbul that Thunberg was โ€œwrapped in the Israeli flag and paraded like a trophyโ€ โ€“ a scene described with disbelief and anger by those who witnessed it.

Thunberg is among 437 activists, parliamentarians and lawyers who were part of the Global Sumud flotilla, a coalition of more than 40 vessels carrying humanitarian aid whose goal was to breach Israelโ€™s 16-year maritime blockade of Gaza.

In an email sent by the Swedish foreign ministry to people close to Thunberg, and seen by the Guardian, an official who has visited the activist in prison said she claimed she was detained in a cell infested with bedbugs, with too little food and water.

โ€œThe embassy has been able to meet with Greta,โ€ reads the email. โ€œShe informed of dehydration. She has received insufficient amounts of both water and food. She also stated that she had developed rashes which she suspects were caused by bedbugs. She spoke of harsh treatment and said she had been sitting for long periods on hard surfaces.โ€

โ€œAnother detainee reportedly told another embassy that they had seen her [Thunberg] being forced to hold flags while pictures were taken. She wondered whether images of her had been distributed,โ€ the Swedish ministryโ€™s official added.

The allegation was corroborated by at least two other members of the flotilla who had been detained by Israeli forces and released on Saturday.

This was a tough week. All week we knew October 6 would come, and we as teachers have struggled between fighting for our students and having to leave them. Today as I walked through my school, I saw what I see every day - our staff engaging with their students, building relationships and teaching like October 6 was never coming. Our staff shows up every day for our kids - we live for these kids. Even in the face of this strike, they were there today teaching their hearts out - no bitching, no grumbling about the strike, not slacking because why would it matter. They showed up to teach. Our kids thrive at school - between classes, clubs and the countless hours our coaches put in to give these kids the best high school experience possible. Our staff goes above and beyond every day. I wish people could have witnessed today. For those who think we are striking for the money, you are sadly mistaken. We are going out to make things better for the students. As a principal for seven years, I have struggled to provide the best staffing plan for my school - but every year our division has received less funding than the year prior. We are forced to make hard decisions - bigger classes, less supports, and a slew of bullshit ministerial orders which add to the stress of all. Somehow teachers continue to take this on - because they care for these kids. I saw my students leave today - many asked how long they would have to be away, many said it sucked, and there were a lot of fist bumps. I feel for those students where school is the only safe place for them, for my special needs students who need our support and who struggle with change, and those students who I check in on and who check in with me every day so I can make sure they get through their day without a major incident. Even the most challenging and toughest students were not happy that we were going on strike.

It didnโ€™t take long for Edmonton mayoral candidate Tim Cartmell to amass a half-million-dollar war chest, before the electionโ€™s nomination period even began. And PressProgress has found that roughly half of that amount came from entities tied to real estate and suburban development.

Analysis How the Development Industry Helped One Edmonton Mayoral Candidate Get a Head Start Before nominations even opened, Tim Cartmell raised nearly half a million dollars, with roughly half coming from sources with apparent connections to real estate, construction and development by Stephen Magusiak, Reporter October 3, 2025 It didnโ€™t take long for Edmonton mayoral candidate Tim Cartmell to amass a half-million-dollar war chest, before the electionโ€™s nomination period even began. And PressProgress has found that roughly half of that amount came from entities tied to real estate and suburban development.

Under the rules for Albertaโ€™s municipal elections, a prospective candidate can start raising money before nominations open in January of an election year, so long as they submit a notice of intent. For the election coming up on Oct. 20, Cartmell submitted his notice last November. Campaign disclosures covering funds raised in November and December were published by the City of Edmonton earlier this year.

Cartmellโ€™s disclosure for 2024 shows no fewer than 53 donations coming from sources with apparent ties to suburban development, with all but eight giving the maximum amount of $5,000.

โ€œThe Tim Cartmell and Better Edmonton campaigns have received donations from hundreds of individuals and corporations,โ€ campaign manager Alex Hwyciw told PressProgress. โ€œWhen all the donations have been disclosed by all campaigns, we will be in a better position to comment on the specifics.โ€

Out of the $447,265 that Cartmellโ€™s campaign raised in 2024, almost $223,000 came from people and companies connected to real estate, construction and development interests, well before most of his opponents entered the race.
