If I am trying to get someone to read, John Scalzi and Becky Chambers are much more likely to hook a modern individual than the book of Foundation

Things are of their time
Some become classics because of themes (Laws of Robotics) despite not being what we'd now regard as well written
Same applies in other genres...would a Christmas Carol sell well now written as it was by Dickens?
But rarely are classics the best entry point for new readers
