One of the highlights this autumn in Highland was finding this flock of migrating Woodpigeons at Durness!. Picked up initially flying north then east when they hit the north coast.

The first actively migrating Woodpigeons I've seen in Highland! #highlandbirds

That is a big area of controversy in the vis mig community. Lots of observations of presumptive Uk birds leaving SW England in late October/November. Few observations of ‘in off’ further N. Do you think these had ‘left’ or ultimately were arriving?

25 years of wader declines This article summarises a Bird Study paper arising from a 25-year Scottish study of breeding Lapwing, Oystercatcher, Redshank & Curlew. The story is set against a backdrop of a changing farming…

Birdwatchers who are under 40 will not appreciate just how many breeding waders there were in Scottish farmland back in 1990.
If your benchmark is 2015, look at what happened in the previous 25 years:

Hen Harrier ‘Susie’, whose chicks were stamped to death in 2022, has been found dead on a North Pennines grouse moor with gunshot injuries If ever there was an example demonstrating the high level of persecution faced by Hen Harriers on UK grouse moors, the lack of consequences for the offenders, and the lack of justice for the victim…

Hen Harrier Susie, whose chicks were stamped to death on a Yorkshire Dales grouse moor in 2022, has been found dead on a N Pennines grouse moor with gunshot injuries.

18+ months of silence about this crime from the police & Natural England.

The BBC has bigger impartiality problems than its coverage of Trump It is the BBC’s entire governance structure–rather than individual stories–that should cause most concern

The BBC made a clumsy error in editing clips of Donald Trump. But its governance structure should cause more concern—including the role of former Tory spin doctor Robbie Gibb, writes @arusbridger.bsky.social.

Removing CO2 from atmosphere vital to avoid catastrophic tipping points, leading scientist says 10bn tonnes of C02 emissions must be removed from the air every year to limit global heating to 1.7C, says Johan Rockström * Cop30: click here for full Guardian coverage of the climate talks in Brazil Removing carbon from the atmosphere will now be necessary to avoid catastrophic tipping points, one of the world’s leading scientists has warned, as even in the best case scenario the world will heat by about 1.7C. Johan Rockström of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, who is one of the chief scientific advisers to the UN and the Cop30 presidency, said 10bn tonnes of carbon dioxide needed to be removed from the air every year even to limit global heating to 1.7C (3.1F) above preindustrial levels. Certainly 'moving' birds down in Low Countries on the trek data - birds 'about' further N would be the data to look for.

Russia’s FSB claims it thwarted a Ukrainian intel op, allegedly backed by “British handlers”, to hijack a MiG-31 with a Kinzhal missile and provoke NATO by flying it toward Romania’s Constanța airbase. Supposedly, $3 million was offered via personal bank transfer.

Another cartoonish FSB story.
