Something that's always helped me parse this is that improving the lives of the people is the #2 priority for a lot of socialists.

Replacing the system with socialism in the #1 priority, and they viscerally resist anything that makes that harder.

For all of it's faults, when WoW decided they we were going to start deliberately making characters gay or trans, the first ones were major lore character the player has gone on dozens of adventures with like Shaw and Chromie.

AO3 would fit on a $50 thumb drive, and the amount of data sent in rich text requires extremely low bandwidth.

So again: AO3's money hoarding is one big scam.
