So nice to see Austin Creek SRA in Sonoma County, CA back open after a five-year closure following the fire that burned through it in 2020. Most of the live oaks and redwood trees survived the fire and are looking great.

The monkeyflower mural

The monkeyflower mural

Description for the mural: Michigan's Monkeyflowers
Michigan is home to six species of monkeyflower found across the state's varied habitats. The Michigan monkeyflower (Mimulus michiganensis, syn. Erythranthe michiganensis) is one of the state's few endemic speciesβ€”a yellow-flowered plant found nowhere else in the world. This rare species grows in seeps, streams, and shorelines on both sides of the Straits of Mackinac and south through the Lower Peninsula to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. It also occurs on Beaver Island in Lake Michigan. Due to habitat threats and its limited range, the Michigan monkeyflower was listed as federally endangered in 1990. Two other yellow-flowered species occur in wetland habitats of the Upper Peninsula (M. guttatus) and Lower Peninsula (M. geyeri).
Michigan's monkeyflowers also include species with purple and pink flowers. The Allegheny monkeyflower (Mimulus ringens) is a delightful plant with showy purple flowers, found widely throughout the state. The similarly looking sharpwing monkeyflower (M. alatus) is found in southeastern Michigan. The American lopseed (Phryma leptostachya) has recently been identified as a member of the monkeyflower family through genetic detective work. Its delicate pink and white flowers, scattered across the forest floors of eastern North America, represent an evolutionary surprise that has reshaped our understanding of the relationships of plant species. Both the Allegheny monkeyflower and American lopseed carry the historical weight of being among Carl Linnaeus's original 1753 plant descriptions, which connects Michigan's flora to the very foundations of botanical science.

Figure 2: Gene expression patterns for the candidate gibberellin (GA) and jasmonic acid (JA) biosynthetic and signaling pathways. Genes that were significantly differentially expressed between coastal and inland plants (genotype main effect, yellow filled square) are shown. The names of genes with higher expression in inland plants are indicated with orange letters, while genes with higher expression in coastal plants are indicated by blue letters. Other significant contrasts are also indicated by filled squares: 4leaf vs. 2leaf (orange), bud vs. 2leaf (red), genotype interaction with 4leaf vs. 2leaf (blue), and genotype interaction with bud vs. 2leaf (purple). Bolded gene names indicate LFC > 2 for the genotype main effect.

It seems like the outcome of a change in policy like that would more of a decentralization of basic biomedical research, right? Also, the funding might go further? Or is the large medical center model superior for discovery because of the aggregation of scientists and colocalization with hospitals?

20.07.2025 18:36 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Do you see this as a model that will continue into the future or do you think we are about to see a major contraction of biomedical faculty positions? Just curious, as the only university I have ever been at with a large research Medical Center was Duke.
