Weak business investment threatens global growth, warns OECD
Countries will be βunable to sustain growthβ unless companies start opening the taps
The obvious cause of low investment is the failure of the finance sector. The economic role of all those banks and financial institutions is to direct finance to investment. The sector is not fit for purpose.

Pretty sure self-hosting could be radically simplified if there was serious money in it. And there *would* be serious money in it if data privacy was taken more seriously.
But it would still be a one pattern among many (e.g neighborhood or city-wide "commons clouds", next to commercial offerings).

"overthrowing them" sounds heroic but as Kemp says: "Weβre dealing with a 5,000-year process that is going to be incredibly difficult to reverse".
Plan B is to build the social nets that will hold the pieces together when the inevitable happens. Those will also be the foundation for the future.

What is happening at an accelerated pace is that we are de-facto assuming responsibility for the condition of large parts of the biosphere, while it is more than manifest that we don't have the political maturity to be responsible stewards (and may even lack basic knowledge about how to do it).

Earth Overshoot Day over time
July 24th is Earth Overshoot Day this year. Carbon emissions continue to be the largest contributor pushing the Ecological Footprint further above the planetβs annual budget
July 24th marks this yearβs #EarthOvershootDay, the amount of time it takes for humanityβs demands on nature to surpass Earthβs capacity to replenish keeps getting shorter.
In the meantime the focus is on anything but our real existential problems.

We need to pick up again the thread of a human-centered thinking around digital, as it started by early visionaries like Bush, Englebart and Tim-Berners Lee and materialized (against all odds) by the open source movement. The design of digital society is too important to be left to the adtech bros.

One of the great disappointments of recent decades is how limited the expectations of societies from digital technology. The dystopic (and ultimately inane) digital bubble of Meta and friends expanded effectively in the vacuum created by the absence of any competing positive vision.

There's nothing wrong with fictional expectations, but you have to pick them well. Pick them for hope, pick them for beauty, pick them for resistance and collective flourishing.
And that's the work in front of us!

In the past two years, without much notice, solar power has begun to truly transform the worldβs energy system.
Globally, roughly a third more power is being generated from the sun this spring than last. If this exponential rate of growth can continue, we will soon live in a very different world, @billmckibben.bsky.social writes.

Imho the real issues with how society responds to technological advances lie elsewhere: the benefits of new technologies can be very unequally distributed (gatekeeping and artificially slow diffusion) and there is disregard for the limited ability of individuals to retrain over the span of lifetime.

It erodes public trust, contradicts EU commitments, and weakens the fight against greenwashing and disinformation.
