I keep seeing the praises for Rosalía and l've been like ••‹ do I say the thing I'm thinking... that's not that? Music aside because she's undeniably a brilliant singer and producer and sonically it's a beautifully arranged project — but is Rosalía following a familiar arc? Doing the Ariana thing .. the Miley thing... The "white girl tries to be edgy through hip-hop" except in her case, Reggaetón... 1/3

+ Cozying up to that world, dating high profile artists within it, gaining cultural cachet and then when there's a sense of dismay or it no longer serves them, they revert by "sanitizing" back to their "white roots," in her case through referencing deeply colonial Iberic Catholicism Especially now, as it's fascinating timing, when Eurocentrism feels more "in vogue" again and as more "refined in quality" than diversity. 2/3

+ I get that she's an experimental artist and truthfully I am glad she's (back) here - in many ways I hope she stays "here" but the whole arrival "back home" feels a bit... nauseating. & for the "but it is diverse, she sings in different languages on the album!!" crowd - the Spanish, historically took and collected anything they deemed theirs. The ability/audacity to dip in & out of places & cultures as they pleased has always been a foundational issue of the power dynamic & part of this critique 3/3
