Here's a poem of mine that the @nataliesolmer.bsky.social and the other folks at The Indianapolis Review were kind enough to publish earlier this week. There's also an audio of me reading it! Happy August, friends. theindianapolisreview.com/a-new-year-g...

Any other poets have a spouse who doesn't really "get" poetry?

Here's my latest published poem from The Indianapolis Review, entitled "I Take My Husband to Readings by Award-Winning Poets." Thank you, editor @nataliesolmer.bsky.social

Resisting the Rewind

There is an odd comfort in repetition. Even as a child, I reread the same books again and again, the characters like friends, the stories like memories. Today on the plane, there’s a man four seats ahead across the aisle who has watched and rewound the β€œShallow” scene from A Star is Born at least fifteen times on his iPad. Over and over, as if he’s memorizing it. Or reliving it. I cannot see his face. It seems too intimate to watch him watch, a longing I do not know how to name. A past I cannot fathom. Later, I knife my way through crowds of roller bags toward a way out, following signs and wonder how some navigate through thick woods with only their internal compasses, even when the trail disappears, each direction a pastiche of branches, leaves, and sky. This is knowledge that is not taught but earned. Hours and hours of learning the way the earth can lead if you allow it, attuned to the present tense, eyes open. I’ve lived too long under the spell of the past, but cannot release its comfort all at once. I begin to pay attention to the curve of a branch, the swell of the water. I once was told that each bridge not crossed is as good as burned, so I start my way to the other side. Watch as I dive in. I’m learning how to split the difference.

Thanks to editor @nataliesolmer.bsky.social of The Indianapolis Review for featuring "Resisting the Rewind" in the new summer issue. Time and memory are popping up in my writing a lot these days, but not usually Lady Gaga songs...

Thanks @nataliesolmer.bsky.social for featuring some ekphrasis I fashioned for The Indianapolis Review! A poem inspired by @joyellemcsweeney.bsky.social and the insect-flecked Schiaparelli piece below. And "Cipher": inspired by the late Alber Elbaz's own glittering swarm:
