Title: Modern Folk horrors of the British Isles

Five images of various characters:

A coven of murderous witches...
Who play loud youtube videos on public transport.

An ancient malevolent demon...
With a three-hour podcast interviewing entrepreneurs.

A flock of bloodthirsty ravens...
Who think absolutely everything is "Woke".

A primordial shambling beast...
Wearing a "Make albion great again" baseball cap.

A mob of satanic villagers...
Who give bad reviews to books they haven't read.

A question for the writer community.

I'm just coming to the end of the 4th draft of my debut fantasy novel. I'd like to get some honest, critical feedback, but I'm not sure where to start, aside from the few friends who have volunteered.
Thoughts or suggestions?

I think my copy shipped today πŸ₯³

It does look stunning, though. I've got the Broken Binding versions of Perdido Street, The Scar, Iron Council, and The City and The City is on order.

I read it last year and absolutely loved it. The story behind him writing it was even more heroic!
(but save that until you've finished it)

I think I booked this, but can't find any confirmation. Who would the email have come from? Who would I reach out to if I wanted to check?

I didn't even bother this time. It's a bloodbath and not worth the hassle.

a banner that says 'indie book recs' in three different coloured banners (green, blue, pink); in the background are a bunch of different book covers.

Maybe you could slum it too and do the Glasgow one?
I live in Aberdeenshire, so it's a bit of a trek to get back.

Shame, I can't make the Edinburgh timeslot, so I'm slumming it at the Glagow one instead.

Thanks for the recommendation. I managed to pick the first 6 volumes up for less than the price of a paperback! I'm not ordinarily a huge comic / graphic novel reader, but this caught my attention.

I pre-ordered mine through Inkstone Books. Looking forward to reading it - once I get through the last two parts of McDowell's 'Blackwater'

One of my favourites of last year. I bought it on the strength of the cover (I know, I know), and absolutely loved it. The relationship between Kaylo and Tayen was absolutely top tier - funny, sweet and dark.

Other than correcting people's grammar, I'd just be a liability.

Writing: slowly plodding through the final chapter of my WIP. I've drafted this from multiple angles so much that I can't remember what I've included in this version.
Reading: Just finished Howling Dark and moving on to (shock, horror) a non-SFF book! Gravel Heart by Abdulrazak Gurnah.

It's so pretty... I'm really looking forward to getting deeper into this. Sometimes, you just know a book is going to hit all the right notes even after a few chapters.
Great job, @thebrokenbinding.bsky.social and @philipchase90.bsky.social

Book 2 is a real step up, too. I devoured them both over a few weeks. Can't wait for book 3

I thought as much. I missed out on the others and can't afford to pay the 🀯 resale costs

Do you know how many copies will go on sale? Will it likely be available just for those who bought OFAB?

The combination sounds awesome, but I'd have to go with Devadasis because I had to look it up as I wasn't familiar with the concept. Sent me on a fascinating research rabbit hole

I've been working with a designer on a potential cover for my debut novel. It's slow progress when you have no idea what you want, but we're getting there.
Here's a section of the background and the font we've decided on, which I cobbled together using my rudimentary Photoshop "skills".

So many...Abercrombie is the gold standard for me. I love Mike Shackle, Michael R Fletcher, and R Scott Bakker.

Can I ask about DuckDuckGo? I know it is better in terms of privacy, etc, but do we know who owns it and how ethical it is?

02.02.2025 21:28 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Google has apparently joined the club of companies trying to whitewash and censor our history.

I’ve been using DuckDuckGo for several years, and I suggest y’all give it a try, too.
