They controlled what I ate, how I spoke, when I was allowed to talk to my family, and the media I consumed. I couldn't listen to music or watch movies, and I couldn't use the internet. I did not feel like a volunteer.

I was a missionary for the LDS church right after I graduated high school. There is immense social pressure to do so. They tightly controlled every aspect of my life. They put tracking software on my phone and a GPS tracker in my car. I was never allowed to be alone.

At BYU's Provo campus in the early 2000's, the campus police followed students off-campus to look for honor code violations. Homosexuality was an honor code violation. Confirmed gay students were forced into conversion therapy under threat of expulsion. BYU denies this, but it was well documented.
