There was a German TV show broadcast on the BBC in the 80s about a boy who sells his laugh to a sinister baron in exchange for the ability to win any bet. The dubbing was so bad I kind of assumed they’d also made the story up on the fly when recording the voice over.

There is an oft referenced Peter Cook quote that goes along the lines of pointing out how wonderfully successful the satirical cabaret clubs of Berlin were at preventing the rise of Hitler in the thirties.
