The scientific road can be a rocky one! If you're struggling with setbacks in your research, consider submitting an abstract for #2025SFS for the session "From Dead Ends to Discovery: Embracing Failure as a Pathway to Scientific Progress" organized by Dr. Elise Snyder and @amaryllis-adey.bsky.social

Hey SFSers! Would you like to be nominated to the Council for Underrepresented Voices in the society? Have any suggestions of someone to nominate? I'm happy to write a nomination, but I don't feel like I know anyone well enough to just do it. So lemme know! ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿงช

I usually set students up with the swirl package, swirlstats.com. This is great for the basics of how to code, so would depend on what their base knowledge is.

Line graph time series of 2024's daily Arctic sea ice extent compared to decadal averages from the 1980s to the 2010s. The decadal averages are shown with different colored lines with white for the 1980s, green for the 1990s, blue for the 2000s, and purple for the 2010s. Thin white lines are also shown for each year from 2002 to 2022. 2024 is shown with a thick gold line. There is a long-term decreasing trend in ice extent for every day of the year shown on this graph between October and January by looking at the decadal average line positions.

Depending on your relationship with your family/friends, explaining your research to them can help you develop these important communication skills and learn where you can improve your explanations or level of detail!

Did you know... there are freshwater jellyfish?

I find them in many lakes I study. Too small to sting us, they live as polyps on the bottom, producing medusae ("jellyfish") when conditions are right. My photos aren't great, so enjoy this one by Jan Hamrsky, www.lifeinfreshwater.net.

An infographic illustrating the findings of our new paper on the cultural ecosystem services of wetlands. The infographic features, as the centre, a drawing of a wetland (featuring reeds, water, a small wading bird, and some insects). Arranged around this central image are bubbles that list the percentage of papers that we reviewed that reported information on different types of cultural ecosystem services associated with wetlands. These include categories such as recreation and tourism, inspiration, sense of place, aesthetic value, and bequest.
