i can’t tell whether i’m more disappointed with the content of the article or with the quality of writing.

“or the simpering lyrics of Damocles.” - i had to look up what “simpering” meant, which is: smiling (?) in an affectedly coy, ingratiating way. but why do you feel that way about Damocles? we will never know.

“There were other moments that made me eye-roll, such as the Kenny G–esque [sax] solo during ‘Aqua Regia’…” - i didn’t bother listening to it, but if you’re gonna call something silly, this would be it. i guess they needed to give the guy something else to do. was he faking it?

figuring out the correct lyrics is simultaneously fun and frustrating game

“The attempted sexuality of ‘Provider’ fell flat…” - for you, maybe! at this point i looked at the author’s name and photo, and i was like “he’s probably a hetero dude and doesn’t get it.” this is a fan-favorite for a reason - it’s definitely a song for the girls and women.

“the band was accompanied by a wild light show that was impressive, if at times a bit hard to look at due to the rapid flashing.” - OK this is another point i agree with! the videos i saw were overwhelming. i think they can tone it down and still have a great-looking show.

“Vessel, the lead singer, who wore his signature outfit of black robes…” - GREEN. They were green/gold/white this time around. Fact checking is a requirement of journalism :)))

“they began lyrically pandering more to pop tropes than their usual esotericisms” - interesting comment considering they just called their mystique “silly.” i don’t actually agree with their assessment of TMBTE.

3) “silly mystique” - what does this even mean. calling what they are “silly” is kind of an insult. they put a lot of work into the image and story they’ve created, and from what i can tell, they’re very serious about it. nothing is meant as a joke. maybe the author missed the point of this band.

2) the relationship the author has with ST isn’t “odd” IMO. a band’s sound evolves and you either like it or you don’t. people falling out of love with bands is quite common.

1) this reads like the author couldn’t think of a better subject to write about so they chose to write about something they’re not even passionate about. if i wasn’t a ST fan, i probably would pass on them after reading that article.

without listening to any of the other nominees, i think sleep token has put themselves in a precarious position in terms of winning over a genre. basically the overlap of genres tends to work against them in rigid categories.

i saw the photo of the “changes” supergroup, and… this where i don’t feel great about the identity-hiding. granted, II chose to be known as that for the song, but imagine winning something that big and you can’t unveil your identity, or even show up in costume.
