Analysis L21 | A driver of human displacement. Toward COP30: Climate change and forced migration in Latin America.

The hard task of exiting the populist trap
Javier Milei’s plight in Argentina demonstrates how difficult it can be to rescue economies
Expecting Argentina’s recovery to hinge on Trump or Milei’s consideration of ‘whatever it takes’ commitment is bad news for the people, and of course dangerous. Unsure as well about what the Financial Times means by ‘national commitment’ -by whom/ to what?! Unsurprisingly biased on.ft.com/4nhn2jA

mientras académicos e intelectuales siguen hablando sobre el cambio que era necesario etc, a que cambio se refieren? que es lo que estan apoyando? Cuidado con categorizar y legitimar el retroceso democrático y sus violencias.

Opposition leaders say ‘democracy in El Salvador has died’ after scrapping of presidential term limits
Legislation allows rightwing president Nayib Bukele to seek unlimited terms, sparking fears of dictatorship
El Salvador just fast-tracked itself into liberal authoritarianism, pushing through a constitutional reform to allow indefinite re-election, extend the presidential term, and eliminate runoffs. And just to kill regional cooperation, quit Parlacen too.

Women’s bodies are war zones in Sudan, DRC, Haiti and beyond. Yet just 10% of funding to support survivors is provided.
Sexual violence in conflict is not invisible - it is ignored.
Our plea to donors: don’t cut money for survivors of these cowardly, pathetic men.

What Will Closing Four U.N. Offices Mean for Migrants? – Inter-American Dialogue
A Latin America Advisor Q&A featuring experts' views on four U.N. refugee agency offices closing in Mexico.
The closure of UN offices and humanitarian programmes that support migration and refugee undermines protection & the human rights infrastructure that support it. It leaves millions without essential aid amidst violence and poverty. This are root causes, and will create not reduce the need to flee.

A week in El Salvador for excellent work w @cintranatalia.bsky.social Visited shelters, borders areas, and humanitarian actors x interviews & presented a report on new migration flows and challenges of regional protection. Impressed with what was said and equally inspired by what was not said.

This is also a call to move beyond seeing forced migrant women as passive victims and towards autonomy-promoting/supporting systems of protection in global migration governance. All this with @artsofdenial.bsky.social @cintranatalia.bsky.social and Gloria Zucarelli.

New publication announcement! here we challenge prevailing assumptions re humanitarian governance by exposing how gender-blind and gender-sensitive protection regimes often reinforce, rather than resolve, vulnerabilities faced by forcibly displaced women. academic.oup.com/migration/ar...

U.K. Court Ruling on Trans Women Is Part of Wider Debate on Sex and Gender
President Trump and right-wing politicians in Europe have railed against trans rights. Britain’s top court has now added its voice to the discussion.
President Trump and right-wing politicians in Europe have railed against trans rights. Britain’s Supreme Court has now added its voice to the discussion, ruling on Wednesday that the legal definition of a woman under the country’s equality legislation is based on biological sex.

Determinants of self-rated health among Venezuelan migrant women in Brazil: a cross-sectional study
Migration between countries in the Global South remains under-researched, with even less focus on the intersections of migration, transnational mother…
Our new article is out @thelancet.bsky.social! We show how Venezuelan women flee because they are mothers, driven by hunger, violence & health needs. But transnational motherhood, precarity & trauma erode health. Migration policy must centre on and redress this.

Prayer and prosecutions: the US ‘hate group’ waging war over Britain’s abortion clinic buffer zones
Anti-abortion campaigners cheer as JD Vance brands safe zones an attack on ‘liberties of religious Britons’
Have no mistake, the same wealthy extremists who helped propel Trump into the White House are pumping money into UK. All those who celebrated Trump discriminating against trans and non-binary individuals need to realise it's also women's rights they're coming for.

U.S. Aid Agency’s Climate Programs Aimed to Curb Migration. Now They’re Gone.
Aid projects were designed to help Central Americans withstand extreme weather at home. Their end could undercut Trump’s goal of reducing migration.
“USAID built a vast array of programs to help families foresee and adjust to climate shocks without migrating,” I told the @nytimes.com.
Ending those programs “leaves migration as the only viable way for many families in the Western Hemisphere region to cope.”

Deporting individuals just for irregular entry is illegal and undermines due process to determine refugee status, and international principle of non-refoulement. In Venezuela political repression, economic collapse, and human rights violations continue. Returning people places them at grave risk.
