Old

I know a few perfectly well
elderly
who can only look back,
you know, the ones that forcefully reminisce
at every point,
as if they have a tilting mechanism
which suddenly acts
to cease their engagement
with the current.
These days I just think
there’s something eminently sensible,
even rather lovely
in that.

Enlightenment

Stopped driving at a crossing,
facing the other way:
a packed city bus,
the young crew-cut driver looked
so serene,
reminded me of a long-ago
college visitor:
a meditation demonstration
from a Buddhist monk;
both calmly following the prescribed path,
each suitably unattached
to their distracting
internal chat.

Sorry to jump on the #poemsabout hashtag, but I am thinking of putting out a selection of poems on the theme of heresy on the #SixtyOdd #Poets page on Sunday Feb 15th to commemorate Galileo's 462nd Birthday. Anyone want to send me anything? (email in alt text)

Between Places. A poem by Paul Connolly. Published in the Lothlorien Poetry Review and The Seventh Quarry.

BETWEEN PLACES
Behold, the between-places places. There,
in ballast screes, barbed-wire nestled, in wedges
of intersecting railway line, plots of nowhere centre on Safestore like villages
around a church. Yet they're forever edges

even when we are inside them, ossuaries jam-packed with industrialisation's bits.
Planning permission for Carpetright can't appease
and domesticate these Lares. Kwikfit's scorched tyre offerings bless and fragrance this

scapegoat ground. Night Watchmen turn perhaps to Crewe
and pray for places where Platonic forms abort and scattered rents of things play peekaboo
with memory. Stripped banality makes norms
go loose. Who knows what rites the guards perform?

Poem:

Bide the Birds

The headless-chicken-world
lurches and stumbles,
excreted lies foul
the blooded snow,
the ice remains un-melted.

Every night, a crimson mouth
swallows the day--

we wake, hope for phoenixes
rising in scarlet, gold, and blue

laying fresh eggs in green,
served sunny side up.

Three days after the hole reopened
and astro-grass rugs
lined a mouth
of mud,
and a hesitating coffin
shone,
gulping in
its last light.

Three days after
the hired-driver’s
mile-marker cough
and that vaping workman
with his too close
shaking,
fearful truck.

Three days after such unseasonal sun
lit a priest’s optimism
and all that time
you stood
when it was done,
rooted:
taking up
the casket’s shock.
