I'm using the time to translate a modern fairytale and I'm really enjoying using fairytale language: slightly old-fashioned, robes and ornaments and hewn from the cliff. Great fun.

Lots of good stuff in there. I think the other thing I would add is that if you get an AI book as a present, do the hard thing of TELLING THE PERSON that you appreciate the thought but that they basically got scammed. If people never learn, they’ll continue incentivizing publishers to put out slop.

“It gives me a vague sting of guilt to donate such uninspiring books, but I still do, since the only other option is the landfill.” <<< The publisher is the one who wasted the paper, not you. Tally it as environmental impact of the slop. Kids receiving donated books don’t deserve AI either ❤️

The last one I read was Anne Berest's La Carte Postale, which I didn't exactly enjoy but it was very good and I highly recommend it. Other than that I've read a lot of classics and major writers, so I'm looking for something a bit under the radar, if that gives you any ideas?
