Texas Observer: Covering What Others Won't From reader to publisher, Carlton Carl has been part of the Texas Observer for most of its 70 years. A look back at his time with us.

Carlton cared deeply for the @texasobserver.org
& always supported staff. The TXO community is feeling his loss today and will continue to for the weeks and months to come. We'll have more to come about Carlton, but for now, read this interview from our 70th:

Carlton Carl was one of the first board members I got to know when I joined the Observer in 2017. He hosted the staff at his Martindale home after a retreat about a month after I started the job. He opened his home and his scotch collection to us, in true Carlton fashion...

I subscribe to the Texas Observer, and I have to say it’s pretty cool that the first headline story is about workers in my hometown fighting for a union.

If you live in Texas subscribing to the Observer is a must. They do amazing work.

UPDATE: a spokesperson from JP Morgan Chase told the @texasobserver.org they fired the operator of a neo-Nazi X account who we identified as their employee.

"This person is no longer at the firm. We do not tolerate hate in any form and take incidents such as this very seriously."

The Observer's 70th anniversary party last night was really something special y'all. It was a great turnout that included multiple generations of those who devoted big parts of their lives to making this magazine, and this community, possible. My deepest thanks to all.

β€˜Not Everyone Can Leave’: Survival Advice from Trans Teens in Texas Media attention often focuses on trans teens fleeing the anti-trans states they’re living in. But what about those who can’t leave?

According to the 2022 U.S. Trans Survey of over 92,000 trans people age 16 and up, nearly 50 percent have considered leaving their state of residence due to anti-LGBTQ+ laws, while around 5 percent have actually been internally displaced.

Dear friends,

Please join us for the Texas Observer’s 70th Anniversary. For 70 years, the Observer has worked to β€œhew hard to the truth as we find it and the right as we see it.” Now more than ever, it is critical to maintain reporting that seeks not only to inform but to hold power to account. A free and independent media must be a stalwart of truth, unwilling to bend to the threats of tyrants.

I hope you’ll join us to celebrate out history as we prepare for the work ahead. As Molly said, β€œKeep fightin’ for freedom and justice beloveds, but don’t you forget to have fun doin’ it.”
