Texas Observer: Covering What Others Won't
From reader to publisher, Carlton Carl has been part of the Texas Observer for most of its 70 years. A look back at his time with us.
Carlton cared deeply for the @texasobserver.org
& always supported staff. The TXO community is feeling his loss today and will continue to for the weeks and months to come. We'll have more to come about Carlton, but for now, read this interview from our 70th:

Carlton Carl was one of the first board members I got to know when I joined the Observer in 2017. He hosted the staff at his Martindale home after a retreat about a month after I started the job. He opened his home and his scotch collection to us, in true Carlton fashion...

Editor's Letter: Introducing Our January/February 2025 Issue
A note from the Editor-in-Chief
βThe Observer has always been a community of those who persist in the seemingly crazy belief that Texas can one day be a more just and equitable place.β

I subscribe to the Texas Observer, and I have to say itβs pretty cool that the first headline story is about workers in my hometown fighting for a union.
If you live in Texas subscribing to the Observer is a must. They do amazing work.

βNot Everyone Can Leaveβ: Survival Advice from Trans Teens in Texas
Media attention often focuses on trans teens fleeing the anti-trans states theyβre living in. But what about those who canβt leave?
According to the 2022 U.S. Trans Survey of over 92,000 trans people age 16 and up, nearly 50 percent have considered leaving their state of residence due to anti-LGBTQ+ laws, while around 5 percent have actually been internally displaced.

Dear friends,

A free and independent media must be a stalwart of truth, unwilling to bend to the threats of tyrants.
I hope youβll join us to celebrate out history as we prepare for the work ahead. As Molly said, βKeep fightinβ for freedom and justice beloveds, but donβt you forget to have fun doinβ it.β
