my actual unironic advice to undergrads is to major in something you're actually passionate about/interested in, and then try and *minor* in either CS or stats. you would be surprised how how much being the person who knows a substantive thing and can do some basic computer/stats stuff can pay off

And for team composition, and the size of the (very difficult to measure) workforce, we did a report back in 2022. It's probably time to repeat that and see how much the workforce has changed. ardc.edu.au/article/nurt...

But actually, that's whole nother dimension to explore. We know for sure that for grant abstracts across different disciplines, the production of software as an aim ranges from masked to overt. That is of course separate to whether software is actually an outcome of the work.

Our goal was to estimate the distribution across disciplines/institutions and volume of software production arising from funding. I know for sure that both funders and institutions don't know and so can't plan for it. But of course, it's true within specific disciplines as well.
