β€œWhen you erase history, you make it easier to repeat…It’s about shaping what people believe about America itself…if the struggles of Black Americans are scrubbed…then it becomes easier to claim that systemic racism never existed in the first place. And that’s the real goal.” - Julian Vasquez Heili

I asked Georgetown law prof David Super wtf is going on with this latest demand for states to claw back benefits already sent out.
He says the law doesn't allow for this, and if the USDA is mad that states already sent out SNAP money, too badβ€”they were following USDA's own guidance. Full comments:

Odd to have the Heritage Foundation show us where the boundary of probity in the Republican coalition sits: gutter antisemitism no, but anti-Black racism & primitive misogyny? Go for it.

So the oldest person ever to become president keeps falling asleep in his office during public events and there’s no big public discussion on how this is a coverup or how republicans are lying to us about how this government is running?

The AP tracked down details of some of the people killed in President Trump's military strikes on drug smugglers he describes as narco-terrorists.

They were, with one exception, not high-level criminals. One was a fisherman. One was a bus driver; another a taxi driver.

If you aren't seeing skeets from some of your fave people, they might have been labeled "Rude" by bsky mods. Idk what they are thinking, I don't need a mommy to tell me who to be buddies with. Anyway, go into Settings > moderation > bluesky moderation (advanced) and turn Rude off.

The Hurl of Sandwich.

The defendant walked free, with a rye smile on his face.

Despite grilling him, the prosecution was unable to summon the special sauce needed to get a conviction. Their case was toast from the beginning.

And thus a hero was born.

I'm sorry. I'm trying to delete this

I always find it interesting how the story changes when a lawyer gets to court. They can say anything they want outside of court without accountability but the rules are vastly different in court where you can get seriously penalized for lying.

I've seen this go by a few times on TikTok now and I have to say, I love this idea. We need a way to convince people to keep running even if they don't win, maybe building the loss into it as a troll move is the secret.

This leads us to falsely perceive that people want to see this kind of content and share more of it.

Spare a thought for those who don’t talk the (Irish) talk

It’s impossible not to look at this in the context of how nationalism in various forms seems to be sweeping the globe. It is expressed varyingly. We see it with the weaponising of the tricolour in neighbourhoods as an anti-immigrant symbol. Clearly wanting to see more Irish spoken is of an entirely different order. Yet, given the times we live in, there were high levels of zealotry in the recent campaign. Whether people like to admit it or not, the shaming of Humphreys on the language front fed the sectarian abuse that was fomented by some during the campaign.
Those who wish to speak or relearn Irish should feel entirely free to do so. Some are doing it in ways that attempt to be inclusive. It would, I think, be a matter of regret to almost every Irish person if the language disappeared. But there is a danger of it being talibanised. There are so many of us out there who simply don’t understand it, no matter how beautiful the Irish being spoken. Some might even consider it rude to continue at length in a language in which statistically over half of those present in the room will not understand what is being said.

Being a professional full-time "opinion columnist" is akin to a career as a Victorian hat maker.

It doesn't matter how stable, thoughtful, and intelligent you are at the outset; the working conditions will inevitably turn you into a dribbling, incoherent lunatic.

I have been a reporter for close to 40 years, including stints covering police and the courts. This thing, from the president down, of accusing people of crimes when not charged: That did not used to be a thing. Authorities don’t do that because it is unfair and leads to cases being tossed.
