The compact disc isn’t going quietly - Chicago Reader Vinyl has long been the big story in physical media, but CDs are cheaper, quicker to manufacture, and poised for a comeback.

New data science blog post! Link in bio. Almost exactly two years ago I deployed a pair of AudioMoths on a property in Yankalilla. What better material for a Python scikit-maad use case? I render some circadian soundscapes with a handy little workflow.

There's a new post coming soon to my data science/acoustic ecology blog, Wrangling In The Antipodes. Documentation of a preliminary dive into the possibilities of the excellent Python package, scikit-madd.

Friday night normcore having a responsibile stout, making a curry and listening to the new Stereolab album. All of these things are good, but the latter is really, really good.

Science is more than a body of knowledge. It is a way of thinking; a way of skeptically interrogating the universe with a fine understanding of human fallibility.

If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to interrogate those who tell us that something is true, to be skeptical of those in authority, then, we are up for grabs for the next charlatan (political or religious) who comes rambling along.
Carl Sagan

Absolutely love the tracks that bookend this album. Quite unlike anything she recorded again. Reminds me very much of Marianne Faithful from around this time.

Antigone, by Eiko Ishibashi 8 track album

Waited a few months for this album to drop. Pardon my turn of phrase, but this is just so fucking brilliant. The production on Eiko’s albums is typically outstanding, but this one is mind-meltingly good. ⚑️🫠⚑️ eikoishibashi.bandcamp.com/album/antigone

I’m seeing a lot of people blame the Monash University Museum of Art for the decision to postpone an exhibition featuring Khaled Sabsabi. The Museum didn’t make this decision and the staff are devastated. The Museum was ordered to pull the show by Monash Vice-Chancellor Sharon Pickering.

Yeah, I mean I’d prefer to use a platform which isn’t helmed by a neo-fascist oligarch.

Congratulations, Creative Australia. Your panicked, craven behaviour has legitimised the cowardice of others - in this case @monashuniversity.bsky.social - & destroyed an eminent artist's career.

Your credibility is currently non-existent & will remain so until your leadership is held accountable.

Nikole Hannah-Jones, the journalist and creator of the 1619 project, wrote on the social media platform Bluesky: β€œWhen scholars of authoritarianism and fascism leave US universities because of the deteriorating political situation here, we should really worry.”

Yale professor who studies fascism fleeing US to work in Canada Jason Stanley, who says grandmother fled Berlin with his father in 1939, says US may become β€˜fascist dictatorship’

Stanley's 2018 book was instrumental in developing my understanding of fascist ideology, as opposed to clumsy generalisation of saying 'this' or 'that' is fascist. The distinctions are critical. I highly recommend the book as a primer for how we've tilted since then into a much darker timeline.

opaque, by Mo Dotti 13 track album

Incredible album. Not intended as an offhand comparison, but I'm struck my how much this band sounds like a version of Broadcast if they had embraced shoegaze music in the late 90s. For anyone inclined, I highly recommend spinning "for anyone and you". mo-dotti.bandcamp.com/album/opaque

Flow is the most beautiful movie I’ve seen since Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car. No dialogue. Astonishing animation..made in Blender on a small budget. Can’t imagine how inspiring its success will be for independent artists and those starting out. The final scenes made me cry hard. Btw, I’m a cat person.
