That is a bit of an occupational hazard for a leading politician or a European commissioner, as I was. I don’t think I am drawn towards rich people so much as rich people have big personalities, a lot of knowledge and a lot of experience to share. I hoover that up, but not because they’re wealthy. It’s because of what they do and what they’ve learnt and the responsibilities they’ve exercised, not the size of their bank accounts.

The Times interview with Peter Mandelson is a masterclass in lack of self-awareness, but this quote about what it is precisely that makes very rich people so appealing to him is especially revealing.

People want action. Smart cities need to go much further, much faster.

Meanwhile, at a school and university near you, AI tools that have yet to be tested on the types of students and subjects you teach are being rolled out to/in them without robust discussion and analysis. It's a major, shameful failing of the management of education systems.

Private sector corporations have one function: to maximise returns to shareholders &do this through various methods- could be house building or water provision or transport. So the central issue of privatisation is that the focus is not on the product but on the returns.

I think people who don’t do A levels shouldn’t pay tuition for people who do, don’t you Rachel Reeves? Also people who don’t get cancer shouldn’t pay for those who do & people who can’t cycle shouldn’t pay for cycle parking or lanes. Oh yes, plus bus lanes and and ….🙄
