Yes that bugs me and leaves me wondering whether they've done this as a choice or just...forgot. I wonder if someone (misguidedly) thought that Tarima couldn't be the pretty love interest with fully black eyes.

Shout out to the commenter on io9 who called the Betazoid thing "lazy writing" because they now have a free get out of any tough situation despite it literally putting the character who used that ability in a coma.

The people who loudly proclaim "there are no female Jem'Hadar" or "since when have Betazoids been able to explode heads" depite 800 years of in-universe time passing between 90's Trek and Starfleet Academy are this to a T. They want new Trek but don't want anything new *in* Trek.

It has so far managed to avoid both the incredibly overblown stakes, numbingly repetitive action and (most of) the saccharine earnestness that plagued Discovery, it's most direct antecedent.

The characters obviously don't talk in clipped, professional language (another bugbear for weird fans it turns out) like they do on TNG but narratively the similarities are there, down to the synthetic main character trying to learn more about what it means to be human (or "organic" as SA puts it).

Of course Lower Decks was a comedy focused animated TNG so maybe what I'm saying is that, in terms of its ability to vary its tone and its stakes Starfleet Academy feels a lot like TNG.

Also I've not posted much about Starfleet Academy on here but against expectations I'm really enjoying it! Still not really vibing with the 32nd century setting but in other ways it feels a lot like a less comedy focused live action Lower Decks and Holly Hunter is one of the best things about it.

Here we have someone citing *Janeway* as an ideal for a new female captain to aspire to. Buddy, I was there when Voyager first came on the air, and you have no idea how mad people were that they put a woman in charge of a starship.

With each new series released since 2017 the vitriol from some is only getting worse. I literally cannot imagine why anyone would want to live like this.

Side note, but Trek's longeivity as a franchise makes it a great example of the Douglas Adams maxim about tech: anything invented before you were born is just part of how the world works, anything invented when you're young is novel and exciting, and anything invented when you're over 30 is heresy.

Once again: people are angry for very good reason, and this brand of post is perhaps one of the most tedious and bewildering. Practically every social media platform is rabidly pro-‘AI’ so are govts, academia, companies. This one small space being critical of AI is okay, I think.
