The pink puff is nearly gone now, they're pretty burned out and turning brown. The peduncles are still growing though!

Flanges under the dead flowers. There's still some oldass pollen anthers floating around here and the dead pistil in the middle, and the flange on the ovary under the receptacle is gettin' larger, especially on the older flower stalks

We are entering the final phase of Boophonery... The size of the sphere is growing, and the flowers are dying back! I pollinated them with my finger last week so these fuckers better be doing something. The ovary is located in the flanged areas. If we get any seeds, that where they're gonna be.

I do love a nice seed-grown gigas, the shape is just so much nicer than propogated cuttings (tho honestly I love those too, haha). You should grow more! The tropical species are really underrated.

Wow, great! D. gigas is generally considered to not self/ requires a second clone to reproduce, but UC Davis reported that their gigas are rarely self-fertile. I suspect it can self but only under specific greenhouse conditions (supposedly they don't flower in Thailand; maybe requires a cold rest).

I've been dying to see this inflorescence in person for years, I'm so stoked about it. I've got a D sp. 'Tanzania' (probably benguellensis) and a star-like sp. from Kenya (also probably benguellensis) slowly developing too. Can't wait can't wait

:] his full name is Dorstenia buchananii var longipedunculata... love 2 peduncle in the longest fashion

TBH it's been very easy to use. My only problem now is that I want about 10 more of these so I can prevent crossing and stop getting foetida growing everywhere. I'm looking into setting up a tropical greenhouse in the yard so I can scale up production; it's more cost efficient at this point.

This is the first year of the three that I've owned it in which I've gotten this plant to flower... thank you for my life, humidity cabinet

A weird β€œflower” on a tallass stem. The flower looks like. Idk. Idk man. A small oval with two long fingers on top and on bottom. It’s just shapes.

Check out my dude here… unsurprisingly, this variety is defined by its longass peduncle (ie the β€œstem” of the β€œflower” shown here, not the horn on top, tho it’s also extremely cool)

You’re close. Remove the bread and triple the egg and you’ve got 10/10

Boophone is even more dark pink and getting bloomed out, but lookin' good. Final stage of the inflorescence approaches and you can see the peduncles gettin' longer

We added a bunch of shit to the hill that was posted previously... now in afternoon sun, we got the cool pink puff of the Boophane. If you zoom in you can find a wooly white Senecio, hybrid medusoid Euphorbia, some draped green Monadenium, and a Cyphostemma currori. If you have not seen these plants before and are hard of seeing, it's basically a bunch of brown and green spiky stuff on tan soil. Sorry I am not wordsmith-ier for you but I did my best

This week was in the top 3 worst weeks of my life, but thankfully I invested all my mental health onto these plants that also refuse to die

Bonus, a bigass Euphorbia polygona in decomposed granite in the section in front of all those other guys. I just think he's neat

Still opening up.

And, pix of the hill for context. Front to back, roughly; Cyphostemma juttae, Pachypodium (incl flowering P ramosum), the Boophone, Eupborbia tubiglans hybrid and E. schoenlandii, Pachypodium saundersii, and Huernia hybrid with Monadenium spectabilis right behind it. And WEEDS >:\

full view of Boophane disticha, which looks like ass this time of year (it's a winter grower). Buncha dead leaves surrounding a barely-visible caudex (more like a bulb) that looks like several layers of crumpled paper on top of more paper. Don't worry it gets better soon

Check out this thread for some hot in-ground Boophone distichia flowering action. It'll get pretty good, I promise. Starting off with the bud from last saturday.

lol yeah. My only worry is, if I grow a non-native species, that Pipevine Swallowtails will eat the wrong one? Apparently some of the SE Asian species are too toxic for the pillers and will kill them instead of conferring greatness like A. californica does
