Quick Thoughts: Book Review | Jonathon Dallimore’s Teaching History: A Practical Guide for Secondary School Teachers Jonathon Dallimore’s Teaching History: A Practical Guide for Secondary School Teachers is a book that many history educators, including myself, are currently engaging with. If you have been on that…

This is a concise and generous review of 'Teaching History' by @vincewall.bsky.social He has clearly read the book and understood the key intentions, even when they are not stated explicitly. Reading like a historian :) Thanks, Vince: disruptedhistory.com/2025/02/24/q...

Stephen King definitely, Patricia cornwall, James Patterson would have to be close….

Oh totally! Also no recognition that while EI might help drill kids for standardised tests like NAPLAN, inquiry develops the critical thinking that will let them make informed judgments (about using AI, trusting sources, voting as egs). A focus on short term gains over learning to learn.

It’s a lack of nuance. There was definitely a renewed focus on EI after the TEEP/Strong Beginnings directive for unis to include explicit instruction in teacher Ed programs last year, but no acknowledgment of the interplay between federal and state systems, varied approaches over time etc. Annoying!

But could you get more ‘Straya than hosting an Olympic event in croc-infested waters? I mean, we could add Drop-bear Dodge to the Decathlon, or the Bob Hawke Yard-Glass Time Trial…maybe enter a roo into the boxing? Do the 100m sprints across hot sand at Surfers? I think the rowing is very on brand 😂

All good, I was early. There were some increasingly stressed people on the queue though :)

Took about an hour from when I arrived to drop bag and clear security. Lots of snaking queues!

Just a heads up #AARE2024 @australianare.bsky.social - Sydney airport is a hot mess (quelle suprise) with long bag drop lines at both jet star and virgin airlines in the domestic terminal. It is moving, but don’t plan on a speedy departure.

@drclaire.bsky.social presenter her work with Nicole Mockler and Helen Proctor on the importance and impact on the Metherell education ministry. Cool to see corpus analysis and media frame analysis in action to explore the ‘schools war’ of 1988 in NSW. #AARE2024

Jose Merigo’s bibliometric analysis of @australianare.bsky.social’s Australian Educational Researcher over the last 40 years provided a great outline of a really interesting methodology and the growth and trends in the journal’s citation data. #AARE2024

Brett Rolfe’s presentation on experimental schools in New South Wales gave a comprehensive overview of how alternative schooling emerged and changed over time. Another great contribution to the #AARE2024 History and Education SIG sessions, and a killer (clear, engaging & colour coded!) slide deck!

President Julie McLeod challenges #AARE2024 to consider ‘how time works in educational research - how generational time plays out in research design, concerns and method’ as we face increasingly disconnective futures. A great provocation! @australianare.bsky.social

@drnomyn.bsky.social session on her team’s method for using big data analysis to answer qual questions offers exciting new opportunities to historians and those interested in the history of education. Another great paper on the fist day of #AARE2024 and the History and Education SIG sessions!

Fantastic presentation to kick off the first of the History and Education SIGs sessions at #AARE2024 from @pennyvlies.bsky.social on the development of secondary schooling policy in Australia in the post war era. Fascinating archival research!

It’s so good to have that direct connection to the classroom - both professionally and personally! Not many jobs where you get to chat with gaggles of young people, full of ideas and opinions, every day! Lots of fun. :)
