I'm sitting in an Indian restaurant in NSW, having just followed up some work in the Wimmera, and had a call about Bendigo as I got off the train ... And I probably need to use my lunch break to make a call about my home Congregation in Northcote. It really is a funny life.

Theology is mostly about learning to have the same conversation.

The perichoretic dance of God is not the eternal dance within the Godhead, but God's eternal dance with creation itself.

Maybe that's a bit bleak for a Thursday morning.

There are these conversations about mission and public theology bubbling away across my church. They're fine, so far as they go. But they feel like the last gasps of Christendom. Trying to hold onto platforms to preach to the converted.

I'm in the doldrums a bit with my theology of late. I just haven't found anything that's particularly interesting or expansive.

Partly it's because I don't have space to really think at the moment, or even read — my brain is just dead at the moment.

I conceptualise my theology as being like a sourdough starter or a scoby. It's alive, it changes over time, it's shaped in new ways by what it interacts with. It functions to affect other things, rather than being the focus itself.

I was talking someone today about weddings, and the vow from Ruth really struck me as a perfect wedding text:

Putting together the agenda for our next church council meeting. We've got a whole correspondence section for once — we never get mail!

I don't really know what this is, but being the chair of the church council of a liberal church in Northcote and having vegan leather blundstones just seems right ...

But the way we proffer critique that costs us nothing, as if it makes no claims on us and only on "them" fundamentally misunderstands the judgement of God: which we ought to seek for ourselves as the refining fire of our salvation, not casting it upon minoritised others.

I swear my mate had a parable about specks and planks ... The way white people immediately turn gender politics issues into critiques of non-white cultures and communities is wild.

Of course the feminist project traverses cultures and work is urgently needed in minority culture communities. +

It's will never not be funny how many of my friends with ADHD constantly forget to take their memory pills.

Don't get me wrong the American empire is better than other likely alternatives. But supporting US multilateralism against MAGA isolationism isn't the radical work or global liberation some people seem to suggest. It's tactics not strategy.

This is actually the bind in US politics — and why for many in the global south it's a pox on both houses.

Dems have an America First agenda too, don't get it twisted. It's just that their America First agenda is as global hegemon not isolationism. +

It is the task of the church to form and equip those who are called. Not to call only those who fit existing patterns of formation and equipping.
