Been watching and enjoying "Der Pass" (Pagan Peak). It's the Austrian/German version of Broadchurch, but replace the British Coast with snowy Alps. Even has Krampus in it.

In my head I don't picture Valve doing this (they don't need this anyway). And yes, this has no technical reason, but the higher prices subsidize the lower ones for overall running costs, while also making sure the consumer feels like they're "getting something" for paying more.

(loving this thought experiment) I agree that size isn't the issue, streaming might be, but could just not do streaming.

Movie-Steam:
- download only
- higher quality costs more (something like 720p for $3, 4k for $10)
- DRM managed via a proprietary file format, but have free app for all devices.

Oh yes totally! (if even, I encountered my share of movies on streaming that were clearly just DVD rips, upscaled if you're lucky)

And on a technical side that is totally doable to get "BD quality" or better without having to hit a 100gig file, probably even less than 10gig.

Fair enough. My point is "compression = bad" or "small filesize = bad quality" hasn't been the case in a while in video encoding for a while.

Especially with video formats/codecs, filesizes alone are not the best indicators of quality anymore.

A well-encoded AV1 movie in crisp 2K can be less than 2GB and will look fantastic even on a 4K TV, but can also easily be streamed on a phone.

And looking at these frames everyday, I can say with confidence it's not worth it for a consumer.
I'd love a storefront to have movies-to-own, but for every party involved, you'd want them to be (the right kind of) compressed. it offers tons of advantages: Playback, streaming, compatibility.

I work on delivering the raw digital frames for final movie processing. There's practically no such thing as lossless. The next best thing, raw EXR frames are incredibly unpractical for consumers for several reasons.
Size-wise, a 2h movie would be ~5.1 TB, but these also have to be cached/readable.

Have you tried Schadenfreude?

I can't provide further details due to NDAs, but have just been given the green light to confirm Godot runs on Steam Frame. There will be a PR soon to address controller support, hopefully in time for 4.6, but in the mean time Frame works with the touch profile.
