Why am I using Lua to script Neomutt to make reading email in my terminal emulator easier when I use my phone to read my email 99% of the time?

(spoiler: the answer is that I am a nerd lol)

I never really wanted to be me. I used to want nothing more than to be someone else. I wanted to stop being me so bad that I almost stopped being. Now, they're telling me I can't be me - and I've never wanted to be me more. Oh, so I can't be me? Is that right? WATCH THIS. I'm gonna be me so much.

It's important that I find joy, find reasons to live, continue to draw breath and be visible and express myself. It's radical for me to... buy groceries, visit a friend, walk through a park, use a restroom. I'm not going to stop, not now, not ever. I'm going to be trans even harder.

In truth, I did see it coming, but I denied it. I tried to hide from it. I tried to tell myself "surely there are other politicians with some sense, and they won't let it go so far." Now the reality of 2025 is here, and it's not shocking. More than ever, it's important that I be myself.

I just want to live. I just want to play video games and watch movies and eat bread. Pet my cat. Listen to music. Nothing dangerous, nothing even risky. Yet, people like myself are under attack for simply being who we are. I never thought it would come to this.

Having my name, wearing a dress, having my passport say my gender identity on it - those things are so "dangerous" that the president himself is signing so-called "executive orders" to stop it from happening. Long since giving up the rebellious acts of my youth, my mundane life is again rebellious.

Now I'm closer to 50 years old than I am 40, and just breathing, just being who I am - is considered such an extreme act that the federal government is trying to stop me and others. Not the mayor of NYC - the president of the US! Trying to make it illegal for me to just BE. Just to live.

Like sure, racism, that's just American tradition - it's bad, it hurts me, and others, but it's nothing new. Daring to tell me I couldn't dance, that it was against the law... that was just too far. It made dancing sober indoors the real protest. More of a protest than being high and trespassing.

Somehow the laws trying to make me stop dancing felt worse. It was like the systemic racism was "a given" - it had become standard. I expected it. I did not expect that my one place of refuge would be attacked with some law saying "this place has no license to allow dancing." It was preposterous.

It didn't matter what I was part of a "cool subculture" anymore, it was about fighting injustice. Granted, night life restrictions were the least of the injustices at the time, but it was so personal to me. I had been victimized by "stop & frisk" policy. I had cops aim guns at me over nothing.

Where being in a small bar willing to listen to Jungle DJs for a few hours used to feel like a pale mockery of what "a real rave was" to me, evolved into something even more bold, even if just because it seemed so absurd. Dancing indoors in a place that checked my ID... was illegal now? How?

It also feels more important than ever. During the 90's Guiliani literally made dancing illegal in NYC through so-called "cabaret laws." It turned dancing into a DUTY for me. "Outlaw" raves hidden way under a bridge still mattered, but dancing indoors at a venue suddenly became more of a protest.
