The NHS has not changed enough for those suffering from long-term conditions, says Suffolk MP A debate on long-term illnesses has sparked calls from a Suffolk MP for the NHS to evolve.

I’ve spoken with people across Bury St Edmunds & Stowmarket about living with long-term conditions.

Last week, I took their cause to Parliament.

It was great to refresh some relationships and meet some new people.

Alternative career pathways are the workforce solution we are all looking for, and the #SASsix is a roadmap.

We need to gather these data. Knowing how many SAS leaders there are allows us to assess the trends. Measuring this also sets the expectation that this is important.

The #SASsix policy calls are: Every early career SAS doctor should have access to an educational supervisor. All SAS doctors should have equity of access to professional development opportunities relevant to their stage of career. All specialty doctors who meet the required capabilities should have the opportunity to become specialists. Senior SAS doctors should be offered the opportunity to be educators at every level on a par with consultants e.g. educational supervisors, clinical supervisors, directors of medical education. All extended roles in leadership and management should be open to all substantive medical staff that is, consultants and appropriately experienced SAS doctors. All LEDs employed for more than two years within one NHS employer should be offered the opportunity to transfer to the appropriate SAS contract.

SAS doctors do need more visibility. Even many healthcare colleagues are not 100% sure what it means when people identify as SAS or their individual SAS grade.
