Instead of promoting trade and helping American companies sell their goods Trump is playing mob boss to generate more wealth for himself
As I explore at length in the article below, "immigration" is not a "legitimate concern" that rises from the bottom to force the elite to crack down but a top-down construction to divert attention away from the many other real crisis people care about

These are not separate phenomena. Twitter creates a powerful impression that you are seeing public opinion. Politicians and journos are all there. They used to be restrained a bit by lefties shouting at them, now they see an all-fascist fake public.

They are intentionally trying to eat into profits from Indie Bookstore Day this weekend, a really important annual event for our important community institutions.

As the article says, "There is a huge gulf between Nazism and what a moderate right-winger considers acceptable. Without a word for anything in that gulf, we have no way to describe the dangers"

We need a definition of far-right which:
a) is fairly clear and easy to assess against
b) will catch far-right parties which are not full-blown fascists
Otherwise we will spend our time quibbling over words rather than calling them out.
Iโm sorry but I really have to stand up for myself and independent media here. Everyone is crediting Ken Delanian for the Maxwell sex offender waiver story, but I was hours ahead of him. Hours. Independent media is important.

The history of far-right parties suggests that there are many who do not realise that they will become targets.

This weekโs letter to 99% members focuses on the urgency of defining โfar-rightโ and calling it out.

UK govt has โgot the balance rightโ on tax, says Rachel Reeves.
Not addressed Tory legacy.
Poorest 20% pay higher proportion of income in taxes than the richest 20%.
Capital gains & dividends taxed at lower rates than wages, recipients don't pay NIC
Mansions and modest homes pay same council tax
And capital is untaxed, which means that it is very easy for a multi billionaire to pay a lower rate of tax on their total economic income than almost everyone else.

I SEE DEMOCRACY AT STAKE
NOT A PERFECT SOLUTION BUT BETTER TO FIGHT
The replies to this post, even on here, even moreso on X, are so depressing to me. We live in a world where cities have never been safer and a minority of people are denying themselves a lot of delightful experiences because theyโve gone mad online.
02.08.2025 14:17 โ ๐ 1227 ๐ 307 ๐ฌ 59 ๐ 14Why are democrats waiting for Texas to gerrymander? Be bold. Go big. Go first. Play offense.
Or wait until Texas goes first and we donโt have enough time to get it done and only match them seat by seat so we donโt appear too aggressive.
One of these is the winning strategy.
UK growth since 1900
(13/38)
The idea that taxing the wealthy would damage the economy and hurt the poorest also bears no relation to reality. We have all seen how poorly trickle-down has worked over the last 40 years both in generating growth and in sharing it fairly.
Here is the picture for growth.
(11/38)
In fact, our debt is not dangerously high, and it is not in danger of spiralling out of control, unless government policies are consistently so bad that our growth rate will be below our cost of borrowing (a cost which is under the governmentโs control).
