"Helsinki has not recorded a single traffic fatality in the past 12 months, city and police officials confirmed this week."
This is the direct and predictable result of policy decisions, not random happenstance.

It would also undermine one of the anti-LTN's commonest claims, that people want LTNs for themselves plus the right to driver anywhere in neighbouring areas; but if several LTNs form a larger entity this latter advantage does not actually exist.
Eg: Camden Town, Kentish Town & other areas (London).
I went to see a high-tech manuacturing business. They had half-a-dozen electronics & software engineers (2 at post-PhD level) plus half-a-dozen staff who managed line & filled cardboard boxes for despatching products. But in Ireland's case it is very much to do with its tax policies being attractive
26.07.2025 09:30 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0The 'close one' with high prodn per person illustrates the potential for us to read too much into any one statistic. In this case the stat reflects the tax policies of the 'close one', not its production achievements. Need here is to relate distribution of high-tech & low-tech manf to each nation.

John is better at 'smoke-filled rooms' stuff, it's his natural habitat & I'm sure he's worked hard at backing the anti-bus bypass campaigners, giving them the benefit of his lobbying over noise issues.

Do they still exist as a campagning force? I haven't see hardly any activity from their accounts for some time now (mind you I've not actively looked for it). I guess they see more benefits from dealing in what were known as 'smoke-filled rooms' where they find anti-cycling MPs & councillors.

After: risk to life for people in bikes gone ; pedestrians and cyclists occasionally arrive at a cycle track zebra at the same time, with zero risk to anybody's life. Sometimes a cyclist is rude and doesn't give way. Hmmm which is better.
Central London is often jammed up by buses & cabs, but the lobbyists of both modes seek others to blame, mainly alighting on cycling as the 'real' problem.
01.07.2025 15:05 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0In part it is the stranglehold the bus lobby has on local/central government. An 'item' on trams on BBC R4 Today a couple of weeks ago was typical - only one person was interviewed, from a think tank, & just criticised trams.
Buses are cheap to start, but are unattractive to users, & cause jams.
