Helsinki goes a full year without a traffic death A city traffic engineer credits the success to lower speed limits and smarter design.

"Helsinki has not recorded a single traffic fatality in the past 12 months, city and police officials confirmed this week."

This is the direct and predictable result of policy decisions, not random happenstance.

It would also undermine one of the anti-LTN's commonest claims, that people want LTNs for themselves plus the right to driver anywhere in neighbouring areas; but if several LTNs form a larger entity this latter advantage does not actually exist.
Eg: Camden Town, Kentish Town & other areas (London).

I went to see a high-tech manuacturing business. They had half-a-dozen electronics & software engineers (2 at post-PhD level) plus half-a-dozen staff who managed line & filled cardboard boxes for despatching products. But in Ireland's case it is very much to do with its tax policies being attractive

The 'close one' with high prodn per person illustrates the potential for us to read too much into any one statistic. In this case the stat reflects the tax policies of the 'close one', not its production achievements. Need here is to relate distribution of high-tech & low-tech manf to each nation.

My experience with LS is from some time ago (when thePA rep on Camden council, a LibDem cllr, voted against the RCS & Tavipl after appearing supportive) I was for a while a trustee. The board was roughly divided into cycle haters & those who wanted a 'progressive' transport policy.

BBC R4 Today programme is making great efforts to 'get down & speak with the people', using whenever feasible the local lingo with a discussion this morning with one contributor talking about the 'Prelapsarian Realm' (in this case meaning not the Garden of Eden but the British coast).

Low Traffic Neighbourhoods in London reduce road traffic injuries: a controlled before-and-after analysis (2012โ€“2024) Background Between 2015 and 2024, 113 Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) were implemented across Greater London, with 27 subsequently removed. We investigated their impacts on road traffic injuries ins...

Yet another credible academic study published today, this time in the BMJ, showing that LTNs significantly cut road traffic injuries. To no one's surprise.

John is better at 'smoke-filled rooms' stuff, it's his natural habitat & I'm sure he's worked hard at backing the anti-bus bypass campaigners, giving them the benefit of his lobbying over noise issues.

Do they still exist as a campagning force? I haven't see hardly any activity from their accounts for some time now (mind you I've not actively looked for it). I guess they see more benefits from dealing in what were known as 'smoke-filled rooms' where they find anti-cycling MPs & councillors.

In the Paris suburb of Aubervilliers, city planners measured a reduction of 2.5 degree drop when replacing a car park with 70 trees. Another programme by Mรฉtรฉo France has concluded that in a Parisian neighbourhood with 300 hectares of green space, the temperature drops by 0.5 to 1.

I agree with the proposal to permit removal of front number plates from 'performance' cars on condition that any such vehicle must have speed limiters & 'black box' fitted that actively prevent the vehilce from exceeding any speed limits. Also devices to minimise sound of any performance driving.

UK govt is in a bind: if it raises taxes or cuts spending it'll lose voters, if it raises more debt it'll be punished by bond markets raising debt servicing costs. Its only hope is economic growth; but that will only happen if it joins EU. It's time to decide which course to take.

A family cycles on CS2

In the five years leading up to the replacement of blue paint with segregated cycle tracks and floating bus stops 5 people were killed on CS2. In the ten years since they were constructed no cyclists had died and there have been no significant collisions between cycles and pedestrians at bus stops

Before : serious risk to life for people on bikes
After: risk to life for people in bikes gone ; pedestrians and cyclists occasionally arrive at a cycle track zebra at the same time, with zero risk to anybody's life. Sometimes a cyclist is rude and doesn't give way. Hmmm which is better.

Central London is often jammed up by buses & cabs, but the lobbyists of both modes seek others to blame, mainly alighting on cycling as the 'real' problem.

01.07.2025 15:05 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

In part it is the stranglehold the bus lobby has on local/central government. An 'item' on trams on BBC R4 Today a couple of weeks ago was typical - only one person was interviewed, from a think tank, & just criticised trams.
Buses are cheap to start, but are unattractive to users, & cause jams.
