Grassland Ecologist in England trying hard to save nature in an official capacity, annoying some in the process. Fungi, insects, plants fanboy, indie music, occasional loud lefty, union geyser, politics, football, cycling & tofu.
Hallelujah to what Dr Jane Goodall said.

26.09.2025 07:13 β π 9 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0This is a brilliant post about heat pumps and policy. As a new heat pump owner, it has al already transformed our home; water, heating, aside from the carbon reduction the cost (we combine solar) has collapsed. Like getting an EV thereβs no going back, this has to be the future.
24.09.2025 07:49 β π 5 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0Iβm expecting an equally big announcement on a cycle path networkπ€
22.09.2025 10:22 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I get crappy AI images of βperfectβ wildlife scenes/habitats coming up on here. Hate them. As an antidote - real wildlife is 200+ #Swallows and #Housemartins gathering on the wires near my house. No embellishments! Sad to see them going bit joy at seeing them.
22.09.2025 10:19 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The relief was there when they won the GE but was tempered by the realism (concern) where Starmer would go. What is so disappointing, with a clear mandate they couldβve been brave, different. Any positive policy/change has been cancelled out by cock-ups & unnecessary lurch right.
20.09.2025 08:44 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Great news. Actually checked out our own membership yesterday (all good) and once COVID (yep 3rd time and wiped) really want to get involved.

18.09.2025 19:55 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0So please take a little time to send a message and stand up for nature, including Fonescaβs Seed Fly: action.rspb.org.uk/page/166270
02.09.2025 16:40 β π 10 π 5 π¬ 1 π 1This cause is close to my heart - please sign: you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/sa... our finest, internationally important wildlife places need full protection. This application for a golf course ffs should never have seen the light of day. π‘

17.09.2025 07:59 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Today Iβm mostly trying to do my bit for fungi conservation. Key point, the UK is globally important for grassland fungi. We protect just 5 sites in England. We have 26 #IUCN Red listed grassland fungi species i.e accorded the same status as Giant πΌ. I reckon we should be doing a bit better?!
17.09.2025 07:48 β π 43 π 10 π¬ 2 π 0Today as Trump violates the Uk, the weather is appropriately stormy and foul.
17.09.2025 07:28 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0It appears to be clearing from the south westπ

17.09.2025 06:09 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I have not heard a single rational or reasonable defence of the so called right (who in the current context are really proto-fascists) when challenged, that defends their outlandish position that the βleftβ are the carrying out violence against the right. USA is in a seriously bad place.

With the lovely rain finally dampening the grasslands Iβm looking forward to waxcaps and other fungi to bury my head into the turf and disappear from the shit show going on in the world. Selfish escapism, but needed just occasionally. Anyway, some waxcap fungi picsβ¬οΈ

28.07.2025 20:56 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Dogma, neo-conservation absolutism is overtaking ecological thinking and costing nature in the process. Itβs happening in the UK too either by misguided ideology (rewilding - which is important) poor understanding of grazing ecology and/or decline in sustainable farming/grazing practices.

28.07.2025 10:49 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Good luck. The golf course that destroyed a protected sand dune SSSI. Trump treated the locals at Balmedie with contempt. Govt complicity and corruption allowed Trump to wreck our natural environment. www.theguardian.com/film/2020/au...
28.07.2025 10:45 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Looking forward to your book, genuinely fascinated by this subject. As an ecologist, this stuff is disturbing but I was intrigued on a visit to the Orstvarderpsaslen years ago and the reconstructed Heck cattle and their dark fascist history. Somewhat scary reading tooπ³
