1/2: At its meeting of the 30 May 2025, The Elders Council (ie directors) of Dharriwaa Elders Group requested this social media post:
“It is with great sadness that the DEG Elders Council learnt that the recent Native Title Tribunal decision didn’t stop the Santos' proposal.

“We encourage all Aboriginal people in the Namoi and Barwon valleys to apply for Specific Purpose Water Access Licences. Any Aboriginal person that wants to apply for a water licence can come to Dharriwaa Elders Group in Walgett. We can explain the licences to you and help you apply for one.” 📣💧🐟

2/3: These licences are for 10 megalitres each & available to Aboriginal people for cultural purposes under NSW Water Sharing Plans. “We are looking forward to Aboriginal people owning water. We will use the water for cultural outcomes & the health of the rivers,” Sandra Suey-Thorne, DEG Speaker.

Today ten Aboriginal people from Walgett applied for Specific Purpose Water Access Licences in the Namoi and Barwon rivers.

At the Elders Council meeting 28 March 2025 we reaffirmed DEG’s commitment to the Yuwaya Ngarrali partnership with UNSW. "It was good to have with us this week Ruth McCausland and Andrea Hadaway from YN/UNSW who provide great support for our team and the outcomes of the organisation."

2/2: But majority of the readings are within an okay range. The Rangers will be monitoring for fish kills given that the dissolved oxygen have been low in the past few weeks.

1/2 Walgett River Water Quality 21st March 2025.
The pH, salinity & temperature at all sites & depths on both the Ngamaay & Baawan Rivers are today within a healthy range. With the dissolved oxygen there are a few readings where they are in the healthy range 😡⚠️AND A FEW WITHIN A DANGEROUS RANGE. 😡⚠️

3/3 The temperature at the Walgett Weir (Baawan River), Stock Route and Boat Ramp are within a healthy range. The temperature at the 5 Mile (Baawan River) is outside the healthy range but is at an okay level.

The pH levels and salinity levels at all sites along the Ngamaay and Baawan Rivers are within the healthy range.
The dissolved oxygen at the 5 Mile (Baawan River), Stock Route and Boat Ramp (Ngamaay River) are outside the healthy range but are at an okay level.

4/4 😢The temperatures at all sites and depths were outside the healthy range. Higher temperatures could cause stress for the fish with the dissolved oxygen also being dangerously low because warmer water holds less oxygen than cooler water. 😟😢

3/4 🤨The salinity in the Ngamaay and Baawan River was within the healthy range.🤨

2/4 😟The dissolved oxygen at all sites, all depths was outside the healthy range and at a dangerous level. At 3mg/L fish kills can occur. DEG and others have made reports/sightings of fish kills in the Baawan River last Monday 9th December 2024. 😟
