Did you know you can suggest names for future storms?
Wouldn't it be terrible if lots of people submitted Wael (CEO of Shell) Murray (BP) Darren (ExxonMobil) Mike (Chevron) and Patrick (Total)...

I see your 'progressive except for Palestine' and raise you 'performatively progressive for Palestine' where organisations or individuals who describe themselves as progressive don't care unless it is about Gaza www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

24.11.2024 19:03 β π 37 π 6 π¬ 2 π 0Apparently there are people - genuine, intelligent people - who think climate policy is trying to maintain CO2 and temperature at 'arbitrary baselines'
The precise conditions to which all of human civilisation and its infratructure are adapted are... arbitrary?
Interesting how the media are talking a lot about a protest against something that will have the greatest impact on the wealthiest in the country, when they say so little about protests against something that will greatly impact everyone in the country. I wonder why that is...

There is no right or wrong answer, just a plurality of perspectives to consider and discuss as part of decision making.
Thoughtful and considered positions, whatever they are, hold more strength than impulsive responses which often highlight our own personal biases and gaps.
4. Access
Diversifying our platforms means not just holding space, but opening it - broadening access to our content and community. Genuine discourse and shared power thrive on inclusion, not restriction. Removing content from a platform is a choice to limit that inclusion.
3. Holding space
Groups like XRUK have always held space well, both on the streets and in other ways. We do not win by conceding space to the very worst examples of abuse of money and power. It is always necessary for someone to hold space against power, leaving lets hate win.
2. Principles
It is difficult to find platforms that do not have inherently problematic power dynamics. In a toxic system, we have to use the tools of that system in order to leverage change, and use constant vigilance in recognising and considering how we strike that balance.
1. Privilege
Trusted social media networks are a lifeline for activists in the global south. We should not be severing the connections and voices of those most vulnerable to repressive regimes and the impacts of the climate and ecological emergency. Walking away from a platform is a privilege.
Xodus and what it means for climate justice movements.
Movements built on strong ethical foundations can often find themselves pushed into being reactive to emerging stations. There are some considerations to bear in mind when deciding to ditch the other place entirely... π§΅
COP29 President, the Azerbaijan environment minister Mukhtar Babayev in front of flags of the UN and UAE, where COP28 was held. The climate warming stripes frame the image. The text βCOP29 is a fossil fuel scamβ overlays the image. The word scam is dominant.
COP 29 is a fossil fuel scam
For 30 years the UN COP Climate Conferences have failed to deliver meaningful change. They have served as a βtalking shopβ with the big polluters given seats at the top table to cast doubt over the sciences and delay meaningful action.
