Ancient winemaking rises from the ashes of Pompeii The archaeological park in the city, which was destroyed in a volcanic eruption in AD79, has announced a plan to revive the tradition

Had a nice chat with James Imam for @thetimes.com on the new #vineyard and #winery in #Pompeii. Curious to see how these new #wines, made with ancient vine-growing techniques and clay jar #fermentation, will turn out! ๐Ÿ‡๐Ÿท

Working #women are frequently attested in the #Roman empire: the funerary stele of Sentia Amarantis depicts the deceased tapping wine from a barrel. She was an inn-keeper and died at the age of 45. The stele was set up by her husband.

From Augusta Emerita/Mรฉrida, 3rd c. AD.

What did Roman wine taste like? Much better than previously thought, according to new research Roman wines may have looked and tasted better than long assumed. The answer lies in their use of clay jars, a technique still used in modern winemaking in Georgia.

Wrote a short piece for The Conversation on my recent #Antiquity paper with Paulina Komar on #wine in #Roman #dolia!

Good questions! Yes, as far as we can tell, pruning was part of the yearly activities, and no, "strangling" does not seem to have been a problem, as it wasn't in later and pre-modern versions.
