One detail that struck me in this story is how Daniel was the only person covering the trial of a mafia hitman in a city the size of Montreal.
To add to your list of the effects of dying local journalism: The fact covering this trial solo helped make him a target.

RCMP prepares to deploy body cameras to thousands of officers nationwide | CBC News
The RCMP is set to give an update today on its plans to attach cameras to frontline officers later this month, marking a monumental shift in how Mounties and Canadians interact.
The size and unique mandate of the RCMP makes this the largest and most ambitious rollout of body cameras in Canada.
The RCMP's profile also likely means its program will attract added scrutiny over when the cameras are used and who gets access to the footage.
