Dear Mr Stride, can you please help me and other UK children’s book illustrators?

The governing is considering AI policy measures that would make us, as copyright holders, ‘opt out’ if we don’t want tech companies breaching our copyright to train their systems. The big companies then use our own art in competition against us.

The UK ought to be proud of its children’s book tradition. Our artwork is exported all over the world, and by giving it away free, we’re ruining the industry. Children will be poorer: there’ll get dumbed-down, mechanical books that have no real person thinking hard about each aspect of them.

My colleague Steve Antony described it:
“It’s like allowing someone to break into my house and steal my belongings so that they can research, recycle and resell them, unless I stick a label on each and every one of my belongings that says ‘DO NOT STEAL’, even though the objects are clearly not theirs and clearly within someone else’s house. That house bring my copyright. It’s absolutely ridiculous, makes no sense, completely destroys existing copyright laws and insults every single one of us.”

Please, could you stand up for us and out copyright? If you could mention our concerns to Feryal Clark, Minister for AI & Digital Governent, and to Chris Bryant, Minister for Creative Industry, Arts & Tourism, I’d greatly appreciate it.

Warmest wishes, Sarah McIntyre,

A handwritten letter on my illustration work desk to my local MP, Mel Stride, asking him to help UK children's book illustrators keep our copyright during the current AI policy consultation ✍️

OpenAI Pleads That It Can’t Make Money Without Using Copyrighted Materials for Free OpenAI is begging Parliament to allow it to use copyrighted works because it's "impossible" for the company to make money without them.

I can’t make money on car sales without stealing cars. And my jewellery business is entirely dependent on burglaries. Think of the economy, people, and not minor inconvenience to individuals!

Today, the UK government announced a proposal to change copyright law - for the benefit of AI companies - that would cause huge, irreversible harm to creators.

More info below, but most importantly here's what you can do (wherever you live):

We have until the 25th of February to state our views on Copyright and AI.

I could really use some guidance from @societyofauthors.bsky.social in understanding this form, and the AOI and other creative associations.

READING ALOUD CHANGES CHILDREN'S LIVES FOREVER! Just 10 minutes a day can be enough to help them find the love of books, and become lifelong readers. So whatever else you do, always find the time to read aloud – and the more you do, the better! #literacy #reading #books

I’m finding it hard to get going these last few days, not uncommon for me in winters.
If you got up depleted of beans, well, you are not alone. Let’s go forth and somehow get through today.

“Picture books are one of the few places where adults and kids can meet as equals. And where sometimes kids, unbound by convention and alive to the possibilities of language and art, can show adults how to read.”

Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day.
Teach a man to fish, he'll contribute to the global overdepletion of the ocean.
So give him a salad, maybe.

I can never understand why children's books get left out of "great book" lists. The books we call "children's books" are really books written for an audience that includes children, but excludes no-one. They are books for EVERYONE - and if you exclude them, you miss the most important books of all!

Did you know that it's #GriefAwarenessWeek?

Books can help children to explore feelings around grief and see that others have had similar experiences to them.

We've picked out some titles that you might like to try, with lists for different age groups:

If you’re looking for a free way to support an author, did you know you can ask your library to stock a book you want to read that they don’t have yet? And usually it’s a very basic online form? Google your library name plus the words “request a title” or “suggest a title” to find yours.
