So every year around my birthday (Sept. 29th) I create a self portrait, to represent aspects of my journey, personal, spiritual, and artistic. This year, instead, I decided to create a portrait of the grim reality we have been experiencing in the country. I don't think I need to say anything or explain what the piece means. ‘Insurmountable’ is an expression of how homeless individuals may see their situation while at the same time showing how society feels about the situation. Each side's sensibilities are viewing the problem as Insurmountable. Homeless individuals spend most of their time outside, in the harsh elements. To visually exhibit this brutal way of surviving, I decided to meld an individual into the Matterhorn. I chose the Matterhorn because it is a well-known mountain and it is in Switzerland, which some would say is the Banking Nation of the Wealthy. The yellow bowl he is holding represents a sense of hope of want. To amplify this sensibility, I inserted a wish bone inside the bowl. In the distance, on the side of the mountain is a City Skyline, in which silhouetted individuals appear, slowly waiting in a soup line. The work was made right before the Pandemic took grip of the country. The Pandemic and other current social catastrophes have further exposed inequities and a lack of any social safety net, putting more individuals at risk of falling into this insurmountable problem.

Indigo A resilient blue, you do not fade in time. The sun rose riding in like a serpent in the sky. The traveler set ablaze the path, giving light to the many cultures that grew and migrated out from the land of Aztlan. Divine ancestor, sacred being, beautiful sister adorned in indigo, carrying the fabric and color of life, your gift of maize we recieved. We grew like the milpa fields that nourished us, each kernel blessed by her presence. Loving aura, energy, radiant, bringer of hope, change, birth, death, your roots grew deep into Earth, into the brown dirt. Your presence sits there patiently. Some may forget these truths, but the brown dirt that caresses us, colors our skin, reminds us. It tells us to be the resilient blue. Blue of sacrifice, blue of strength, blue of ceremony, Indigo that adorns our walls, our art, our bodies, our spirit. A resilient blue, like it, we do not fade in time. Resist/Persist

Drift Yellow brilliance of hope, at dawns early light. The land mourns. Huddled mountains, standing sentinels. Bear perpetual witness. Mists of blues and lavender arms hug, caressing the veil that shrouds their purple majesty. Tides of time that ebb and flow. Emerald, Aqua blue, crystalline dreams. Culture bearer remains afloat. You, the life (boat), bouyed, feeling a sense of direction. Whisper to the wind your oral history. It will carry the kernels of tradition. Paddle of aspiration keeps the faith. Wisdom prevails, and tomorrow always comes. Just stay afloat.

The mythology of the Iris flower dates to Ancient Greece when the goddess Iris, who personified the rainbow (the Greek word for iris), acted as the link between heaven and earth The piece is a representation of this mythological goddess, painted in a way that reflects my cultural heritage. In Spanish, the word Arcoiris means rainbow. The young girl in the piece is Panchimalco, celebrating the flowers and palm festival. Panchimalco are descendants of Pipil Indians fleeing the Spanish takeover of San Salvador during the 16th century, into areas originally inhabited by Mayan and Nahuatl peoples. Panchimalco is known for its indigenous population and its festivities.

'Keepers of the Fire' 2019, 40x30x2, acrylic canvas🦋 Indigenous women activists have stood up to Patriarchal colonization and have demonstrated bravery throughout history. They have shown spiritual strength, discipline, and organizational skills. They have stood up for indigenous rights, anti-colonial resistance, the environment, and cultural traditions. The piece “Keepers of the Fire” depicts a few of these women: Toypurina was a Tongva warrior who resisted, fought the Spanish colonization, and evaded capture for many years Rigoberta Menchu a K'iche' Guatemalan human rights activist, feminist, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, who has dedicated her life to promoting Indigenous rights internationally Truganini, a Tasmanian indigenous woman, is a strong, defiant woman who stood up against the colonization of her homeland. She is a symbol of the survival of the Tasmanian Aboriginals.
